Hi, I am Michelle Moore, the designer and teacher behind MJ’s Off The Hook Designs, based in Lakefield, Ontario, Canada.

My crochet story began in January 2013 when my daughter brought home knitting needles and a crochet hook from school. I learned the basics from a CD, then dove into YouTube tutorials and fell completely in love with the craft. By spring, I was selling handmade hats and accessories to a local boutique and through Facebook.

In May 2015, I published my first crochet pattern. My second pattern, the Shark Cocoon Blanket, went viral during Shark Week, and the Mermaid Tail Blanket took off soon after. Those two designs launched my career and connected me with a global community of makers.

In early 2017, my Hooded Owl Blanket went viral on Facebook, garnering more than 39 million views. That same year I was featured on Tyra Banks FABLife in the segment about turning your hobby into an income. From that moment, my little studio in Lakefield grew into an international brand for modern, approachable crochet patterns.

Today, our patterns focus on creating achievable, fashion-forward garments and cozy, modern home décor. Every pattern is built for success, featuring detailed written instructions, step-by-step video tutorials, clear charts, and minimal or seamless construction, along with helpful modification notes.

Craftsmanship and Team

Every pattern is professionally tech edited by Emily Reiter of Fiat Fiber Arts to ensure clarity and quality. My daughter Emma handles admin, helps manage our community group, contributes to blog writing and newsletters, and is learning to design her own crochet patterns. Laurie helps keep our Facebook community friendly and supportive, while my dad assists customers with downloads and pattern access. My husband and our bookkeeper manage operations behind the scenes, keeping everything organized so I can focus on what I love most, designing patterns and filming tutorials.

Our business is truly a family affair. My husband, kids, and granddaughter often model my designs, from baby to child, teen, and adult, allowing us to showcase our pieces on real people of all ages. Each photo tells a story of warmth, connection, and creativity. We truly are a family run studio here in Lakefield, Ontario, where every member plays a part in keeping our handmade dream thriving.

You can substitute yarns in any MJ’s Off The Hook Designs pattern, but it’s important to match the original yarn’s weight, fibre content, and gauge to maintain the correct fit, sizing and drape. We don’t suggest changing the yarn weight unless you’re comfortable modifying crochet patterns, as this can affect sizing and yardage requirements. Each pattern includes gauge information to help you achieve accurate results with any brand. For convenient alternatives, try using YarnSub.com it’s a great resource for finding yarns with similar fibre composition and texture.
