Mary Maxim Prism

I’m so excited to share that Mary Maxim has expanded their Prism yarn line! For the Granny Ruana, I used the gorgeous new colour Succulent, and I’m absolutely in love with these hues!

If you’ve been around for a while, you know I’ve used Mary Maxim Prism yarn throughout my entire granny stitch collection. Sadly, many of the shades I originally used have been discontinued, so I’m thrilled that they’ve introduced new, stunning colours!

I’m even remaking the Granny Pop Pullover in the shade Sand Storm, and let me tell you—it looks fantastic! Stay tuned for the reveal!

Size Chart & Yarn Requirements

OVERSIZED Fit with 10+ inches of Positive Ease. Choose the size based on the preferred Finished Measurement. For reference, the model is wearing the M-XL with a 36″ bust and is 5 feet 6 inches tall.

Please note that yarn amounts are estimates and may vary slightly between different yarn brands and individual tension. It’s always a good idea to have a little extra yarn on hand to avoid running out during your project. Happy crocheting!

Gauge

Body: 5 Clusters and 9 rows equal to 4″ in granny stitch pattern with 5mm hook

Ribbing: 5 sts and 4 rows equal to 1″ in sc blo pattern with 4.5mm hook

This cozy crochet project features a striped blanket using three skeins of blue and brown yarn. With wooden hooks neatly placed in a holder and eucalyptus leaves adding charm, it's perfect for those following a free crochet pattern.

Before starting your project, it is best to create a gauge swatch. This initial step ensures that your tension and stitch count align with the pattern’s specifications, a vital aspect when the original yarn recommended is unavailable or when a yarn substitution is necessary. Maintaining the recommended gauge is essential for achieving the desired fit.

Adjusting your crochet hook size or switching hook style or brand can help you reach the pattern’s required gauge. Not all yarn weights are identical (even if labelled the same); variations in thickness, drape, and softness can occur.

I recommend crocheting the pocket for your gauge swatch. Measure your stitches at the center of the swatch, aiming for 5 clusters and 9 rows to equal 4″ for this specific pattern. If you discover too many stitches, consider switching to a larger hook size. Conversely, opt for a smaller hook size if there are too few stitches. You can adjust the height of the stitch with your technique, lengthen stitches by pulling up on them or shorten them by tightening your tension.

I’ve included some yarn recommendations that would serve as alternatives.

Construction

The Granny Pop Ruana is crocheted in one seamless piece, starting from the side and working across to create a beautiful vertical striping effect that highlights the natural colour variations of the yarn. The construction begins with crocheting the front and back panels in a long row, followed by the addition of a back section that forms the neck opening. To continue the design, the opposite side front and back panels are created by working a chain length off the neck opening, ensuring a cohesive flow.

Once the panels are completed, the sides are seamed together using the mattress stitch, leaving openings for the arms. Finally, a ribbed collar is added, along with pockets, enhancing both functionality and style in this charming ruana.

XS/S (M/L/XL, 2X/3X, 4X/5X)

Notes

To begin the Ruana, start from the side and work across. The starting chain determines the length of the Ruana. Alter the length in multiples of 6 stitches (2 clusters). This pattern offers an oversized fit, so be sure to choose your size based on the desired finished measurements. The instructions are written for the smallest size, with larger sizes indicated in parentheses ( ). If only one number is provided, it applies to all sizes.

Additionally, a step-by-step video tutorial is available on YouTube for sizes M/L/XL. When joining a new ball of yarn, ensure to match colours to maintain a consistent flow throughout your project. For the gauge swatch, crochet the pocket worked from the side across.

Rows 5-20 (26, 32, 36):

Rep rows 3 and 4. Fasten off and weave tails.

BLOCKING

Wet the Ruana in lukewarm water with a small amount of dish soap or woolwash. Allow soaking for around 25-30 min. Squeeze out as much water as possible. Wrap in a towel to press out the excess water. Lay on the blocking mats and pin it to the measurements. Allow to dry thoroughly, and remove pins.

COLLAR

Setup Row (RS): With RS facing and smaller hook, put a slip knot on the hook, and join yarn to the bottom corner of the right front panel. Sc in each st across the front right, 2 sc in each row across the neck and sc in each st across the front left, fasten off.

Join-As-You-Go Band

The band is joined as you go to the collar edge. Put a slip knot on the hook and join yarn to the front right edge. Repeat the instructions for the pocket band. Working 1 row for every collar edge stitch. Fasten off and weave in tails.

SIDE SEAMS

I suggest trying on the Ruana to determine a comfortable armhole depth. Place markers at the required depth. Armhole depth should be approximately 7 (9, 11, 13)”.

The mattress stitch is used to seam the sides to hide the seaming yarn colour. The video tutorial provides a demonstration of how to do the mattress stitch.

To seam using the mattress stitch:

Once complete, weave in the ends securely to finish.

Place the two pieces you want to join side by side, with the right sides facing out.

Thread a tapestry needle with a matching yarn (2 times the length to seam). Start by knotting the yarn to the bottom edge.

Insert the needle through the side of the stitch on one side, pulling the yarn through.

Move to the other side and insert the needle through the side of the corresponding stitch.

Repeat this process, working back and forth between the two sides, ensuring the tension matches the surrounding stitches.

Continue seaming until reaching the place markers.

POCKET SEAMING

Try on the Ruana and position the pockets at a comfortable hand placement. Use stitch markers to evenly pin them in place for seaming. I placed the pockets approximately 3 (15) clusters from the bottom edge. With the finishing tail, use the mattress stitch to seam the three sides of each pocket to the Ruana.

Finishing

Lightly steam the Ruana seams and collar to finish.

Washing Instructions

Handwashing is highly recommended to clean your Ruana. Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water and add a mild detergent suitable for delicate fabrics. Gently immerse the garment and agitate it softly to cleanse. Avoid excessive squeezing or wringing to prevent stretching or misshaping. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Drying:

After washing, gently remove excess water without wringing the garment. Lay it flat on a clean, absorbent towel, arranging it into shape. Roll
