How To Crochet A Bucket Hat

Trust me this crochet bucket hat is so simple to make! The Wallflower Granny Stitch Hat Crochet pattern is worked from the top down in the round. Using the granny stitch cluster pattern, you’ll increase to the required number of clusters for the desired size. The hat is finished with a simple single crochet brim to provide shade from the sun.

Best Yarn For A Crochet Bucket Hat

The ideal yarn for a crochet sun hat is breathable and sturdy, making cotton the perfect choice. I didn’t have any super bulky-weight cotton on hand, so I doubled up two strands of Comfy worsted-weight yarn. And let me tell you, it worked perfectly!

Yarn Requirements

Comfy Worsted Weight#4– 75% Pima Cotton, 25% Acrylic (109 yds/50g)

Shown in Ivory, Parchment, Seafoam, Flamingo and Peony. Hold 2 strands together to make super bulky weight yarn.

SIZES 0-6mth (6-18mth, Child, Adult)

BALLS 2 (2, 2, 3)

Skill Level

Easy, written in standard American terms.

Guage

Granny Stitch: 7 sts (2 clusters and 1 ch-1 sp) and 3 rows equal to 2″ in granny stitch with 6mm hook

Brim: 7 sts and 7 rows equal to 2″ in sc with 5.5mm hook

Guage Swatch

Adjusting your crochet hook size can assist you in reaching the pattern’s required gauge or switching hook style or brand can help as well. It’s important to note that not all Worsted Weight #4 yarns are identical; variations in thickness, drape, and softness can occur.

For your gauge swatch, I recommend starting the hat and checking the gauge after 4 or 5 rounds. If you discover too many stitches, consider switching to a larger hook size. Conversely, if there are too few stitches, opt for a smaller hook size. Additionally, you can lengthen stitches by pulling up on them or shorten them by tightening your tension.
