Hat Construction – How to crochet the Modish Mosaic Hat

The mosaic crochet hat is worked from the bottom up. The band is worked in rows and then joined. The mosaic pattern is worked around the band in rounds. The top of the hat is decreased and gathered to close the top of hat.

Having trouble unlocking the pattern?


If you’re seeing the message “Email subscription failed, please try again”, don’t worry — it’s usually an easy fix! Here are a few quick things to try:
First, double-check your login details. Make sure you’re signing in with the same email you originally used to create your Grow account. If you’re not sure, click “Forgot Password” to reset your login. Once you’ve updated it, return to my site and try again.
Next, clear your browser’s cache and cookies. Sometimes the login just gets stuck. You can also try opening the page in a private or incognito window, or switching to another browser like Chrome, Safari, or Firefox to see if that does the trick.
It also helps to make sure you’re logged into Grow directly. Visit https://grow.me and sign in there first. Once you’re logged in, come back to my site and refresh the page — your pattern should unlock automatically.
If you’re still having trouble, check your browser’s privacy settings. Grow needs cookies to verify your account, so make sure cookies and cross-site tracking are allowed. On iPhone, go to Settings → Safari → Privacy & Security, then turn off “Prevent Cross-Site Tracking” and “Block All Cookies.” On Android or Chrome, go to Settings → Site Settings → Cookies and select “Allow all cookies.”
Lastly, ad blockers or browser extensions can sometimes block the login pop-up. Try turning them off temporarily while you sign in. If nothing seems to work, log out of Grow completely by going to https://grow.me, selecting your profile icon, and choosing Log Out. Then come back to my site and try logging in again.

Instructions:

How to read a Crochet Mosaic Chart: 

The chart is read from right to left for each round. Rounds are worked in alternating colours, as indicated on the left column. The entire round is worked in the colour stated. Ignore the colours displayed in each box; this shows how the pattern will look; you will not change colour throughout a round. A blank box indicates you will work a sc in the blo. A box marked with an X indicates working a drop-down double crochet.

When working mosaic crochet in the round, don’t cut colours. Drop off the colour at the end of the round and pick up new colour as you go. Colour is changed at the sl st join. Always tighten yarn tails when joining at the end of each round; this will keep the join invisible.

Row 1 (WS):

With smaller hook and color A, ch 17 (19, 21, 23) 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each ch across, turn—16 (18, 20, 22) sts.

Row 2 (RS):

Ch 1 (not included as a st here and throughout), 1 sc in the blo of each st across, turn—16 (18, 20, 22) sts.

Rows 3-64 (72, 80, 88):

Rep Row 2. After the final Row, turn, RS facing fold band together, ch 1, sl st band together.

The band should measure approx. 14.25 (16, 17.75, 19.5)” x 3.5 (4, 4.5, 5)”.

Body: Mosaic Pattern begins – Refer to the chart.

Notes: Change the color on the sl st join. Don’t cut colors drop off and pick up each round. Make sure to sl st into the back loop only and pull tight for a seamless join.

Round 1 (RS):

Round 2:

Decrease Rounds:

Round 1: With B, *1 sc in first 2 sts, 1 sc2tog across next 2 sts; rep from * around, sl st in first sc to join—48 (54, 60, 66) sts.

Toddler (Adult)

Round 2: With B, *1 sc in first 2 sts, 1 sc2tog across next 2 sts; rep from * around, sl st in first sc to join—36 (45) sts. Fasten off with a long tail for sewing.

Child (Large Adult)

Round 2: With B, *1 sc in first 2 sts, 1 sc2tog across next 2 sts; rep from * around to last 2 sts, 1 sc in last 2 sts, sl st in first sc to join—41 (50) sts. Fasten off with a long tail for sewing.

With yarn needle weave the yarn tail through every other st around. Pull hat tight. Continue to weave yarn around the hat making sure the opening is fully closed. Weave the yarn in opposite direction to secure. Trim tail and weave in all ends.

Pom Pom:

Make a yarn pom pom or attach a faux fur pom pom. Sew snap to the top of the hat. Blow-dry pom to fluff and snap to the top of the hat. Add a garment tag for a personalized touch.
