Best Yarn for a Crochet Headband

The best yarn I recommend for a crochet headband is acrylic. For my headband, I used Brava Tweed from WeCrochet. It’s washable, durable, and has plenty of stretch, making it ideal for regular wear. I would avoid using cotton yarns, as they lack elasticity and tend to stretch out significantly over time.

Pattern

Baby (Toddler, Child, Adult, Large Adult)

The pattern is written for the smallest size, with the larger sizes in parentheses ( ). If there is only 1 number, it applies to all sizes—a step-by-step video tutorial is provided on YouTube for the Adult size.

Band

Foundation Row (RS):

Ch 14 (14, 18, 22, 22), 1 sc in the back hump (leg) of 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across, turn—13 (13, 17, 21, 21) sts. *This is the width of the headband.

Row 1 (WS):

Ch 1 (not included as a st here and throughout), 1 hdc in each st across, turn—13 (13, 17, 21, 21) sts.

Row 2:

Ch 1, hdc in first st, *fpdc in next st, hdc in next st; rep from * across, turn—13 (13, 17, 21, 21) sts.

Row 3:

Ch 1, hdc in first st, *bpdc around first post, puff st in next st, bpdc next post, hdc next st; rep from * across, turn—13 (13, 17, 21, 21) sts.

Rows 4 – 44 (48, 52, 56, 60):

Rep rows 2 & 3, ending on row 2.

Finishing

Rows 1-2:

Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn—13 (13, 17, 21, 21) sts.

Last row fasten off with a tail for seaming.

For the best fit, it’s important to refer to the finished measurements, as slight variations in yarn thickness and gauge can affect the length of the headband. You may need to add or reduce rows to achieve the correct measurement.

Seaming

With the right side facing, hold each end of the headband and fold the ends in half. Position the folded ends together, making sure the starting tail is to the inside of the layers (leaving it exposed for knotting) and the ending tail is on the outside edge for seaming. Using a yarn needle, seam all four layers of the folded ends together. Afterward, knot the tails, weave in the ends, and trim any excess. For a visual demonstration, please refer to the accompanying video.
