Getting started Crocheting a Baby Blanket
The Waffle Stitch Crochet Crochet Blanket is a Free Crochet Pattern. Crocheting a baby blanket is an incredibly rewarding experience. It’s a great way to show your love and care for a special little one.
The first step is to choose the right yarn and hook. You’ll want to make sure that the yarn is soft and gentle against the baby’s skin, and the hook should be the right size for the type of yarn you’re using. I’ve recommended in this tutorial a perfect yarn choice, and I’ve also included yarn substitutions.

I promised baby patterns, so here is another beautiful crochet baby blanket! As many of you know, I’m about to be a grandma to a little girl, so, of course, she needs all the pink things crochet!
Who doesn’t love waffle stitch? I love the softness, and squishy the waffle stitch brings. So, I needed to design a baby blanket made in the crochet waffle stitch. I’ve chosen a modern and feminine colour block pattern perfect for a little girl, but you can change this up to be gender-neutral or masculine.

Yarn Inspiration
For this baby blanket pattern, I have decided to use Mellowspun DK from Mary Maxim (CDN). Mellowspun is such a beautiful baby-soft premium acrylic yarn. You will need to pick out four colours of yarn to match your colour scheme. I used the colours, Cream, Soft Pink, Dusty Peach and Mauve since going with a baby girl theme. Check out these beautiful combinations below for inspiration. The Yarn comes in many different beautiful colours you can pick from.

Mellowspun DK from Mary Maxim (CDN)
Mary Maxim Mellowspun DK (CDN) is an affordable and soft 100% acrylic yarn. I choose a soft peachy-pink palette for this crochet blanket. Mellowspun has numerous colours to choose from, so you can customize it to your liking.
#3 Light Weight Yarn
100% Premium Acrylic 284 yards / 100 grams

D 2 (3) balls 400 (800) yds – Mauve

Yarn Substitutions
Mary Maxim has a few more yarn options that will work perfectly with this pattern. Premier Anti Pilling (CDN) and Bernat Softee Baby (CDN) are very similar yarns. You could also try Sugar Baby Stripes (CDN) and Lullaby Baby (CDN), these colourful striping options would work beautifully in one colour or separate the colour blocks with white or cream. Another affordable premium acrylic yarn is Brava Sport from WeCrochet, or if you prefer cotton, try CotLin from WeCrochet.

Blanket Construction
The Waffle Stitch Blanket is worked in rows from the bottom up. Colour blocks B-D are separated by smaller blocks of colour A. The blanket is finished with a single crochet border. A Step-by-step video tutorial is included for the baby-size blanket on YouTube. https://youtu.be/bXD1cBAoUdg
Special Crochet Stitches
Fpdc – Front Post Double Crochet: Yo (Yarn Over), insert your hook from front to back to front around the post of the next stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops on your hook, yo, pull through remaining two loops on your hook.
Stacked dc – Don’t ch at the beg of a row. Insert hook through the first st and work a sc. Insert hook between the 2 loops of the sc st just made, work a sc st. You have now stacked two sc sts making a stacked dc. This gives the side of your work a clean and straight edge. See video tutorial for further clarification.

Wrap in a towel to press out the excess water. Repeat with multiple towels if necessary. Lay the blanket out on blocking mats and pin it to the measurements. Allow to dry thoroughly, and remove pins.
