Changing Colours in Crochet

Changing the colours of yarn in crochet may seem a bit daunting at first, but with the right technique, it can be quite manageable. I used a handy trick to simplify the process in my Bulky and Quick Elf Hat crochet pattern. Instead of cutting the yarn when changing colours, I simply dropped the current yarn at the join and picked up the new colour at the slip stitch join as I continued crocheting.

To secure the carried yarn and prevent loose ends, I crocheted over it in the first stitch of every round. This technique saves time and effort and creates a clean and seamless colour transition. So fear not; this handy trick can make changing colours in your crochet projects easier. Give it a try, and enjoy the fun and creativity that comes with experimenting with different colours in your crochet creations.

Substituting Yarn

Yarn substitution is a valuable skill for crocheters, allowing you to achieve your desired results even when the original yarn specified in a pattern is not available. If you would like to substitute the yarn for the Bulky & Quick Elf Hat, I have included a list of suitable alternatives.

When substituting yarn, it is crucial to consider factors such as the yarn weight, fibre content, and gauge to ensure that your finished project will have the desired size, texture, and drape.

Remember always to make a gauge swatch using your chosen yarn and adjust your hook size accordingly to match the pattern’s specified gauge. This will ensure that your items turn out the correct size.

Although slight variations in size may not be critical for some of the patterns, they can affect the amount of yarn needed.

Pattern

Sizes: Baby (Toddler, Child, Ladies, Men’s)

Notes: For smaller or larger hats, decrease/increase the band by 2 rows. Every 2 rows = 1″. Don’t cut yarn; when changing colours, drop yarn at the join and pick up the new colour at the sl st join as you go. Crochet over the carried yarn in the first st of every round.

Band

Row 1:

With A, ch 5 (6, 7, 7, 8), work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—4 (5, 6, 6, 7) sts.

Row 2:

Ch 1, work 1 sc in the blo of each st across, turn—5 (6, 6, 7) sts.

Rows 3-28 (30, 32, 34, 36):

Rep Row 2. After the final Row, turn, RS facing, fold band together, ch 1, sl st band together (go through the blo of stitch). Flip band so that the seam is on the inside.

The band should measure approx. 14 (15, 16, 17, 18)” in length and 1.75 (2, 2.25, 2.25, 2.5)” in width.

Body

Setup Round:

Ch 1 (not included as a st), 1 sc in each row around the band, sl st in the first sc to join—28 (30, 32, 34, 36) sts. Change to B.

Round 1:

With B, ch 2 (not included as a st here and throughout), work 1 hdc in each st around, sl st in the first hdc to join—28 (30, 32, 34, 36) sts.

Round 2:

With B, ch 2, sk first st, work 1 hdc in each st around, work 2 hdc in the last st, sl st in the first hdc to join, change to C—28 (30, 32, 34, 36) sts. Skipping the first st and adding 2 in the last st will stop the join line from curving.

Round 3:

Round 4:

With C, ch 2, sk first st, work 1 hdc in each st around, work 2 hdc in the last st, sl st in the first hdc to join, change to B—28 (30, 32, 34, 36) sts.

Baby and Toddler skip to Decrease Rounds.

Child (Ladies, Men’s)

Rounds 5-8:

Rep Rounds 1-4 [1 time].

Decrease Rounds

Round 5 (5, 9, 9, 9):

With B, ch 2, sk first st, work 1 hdc in each st around, sl st in the first hdc to join—27 (29, 31, 33, 35) sts.

Rounds 6 (6, 10, 10, 10) – 26 (26, 30, 30, 34):

Rep Round 5 (5, 9, 9, 9) Alternate colours B & C working 2 rows of each colour ending with colour B—6 (8, 10, 12, 12) sts. Fasten off, leaving a tail for finishing.

Finishing:

With a yarn needle, weave yarn through the front loop only of every stitch around. Pull to tighten the hat and close. Weave yarn around stitches, then back in the opposite direction to secure the end. Weave in tails.

PomPom:

Make a yarn pompom or attach a faux fur pom pom. Sew snap to the top of the hat. Blow-dry pom to fluff and snap to the top of the hat. Add a garment tag for a personalized touch. Leather Rivets are available HERE.

Yarn Pompom Tutorial:

See the full video for the pompom maker tutorial HERE.

Cut a piece of cardboard 5×5″ or use a jumbo pompom maker. With Colour C, wrap the yarn around the cardboard several times so the pompom is full and thick. Remove from cardboard. Tie the centre of the loops with a long strand of yarn, making a double knot. Flip the pompom over and double knot on the other side as well. Keep tie to the side and trim all loops. Trim the pompom to the desired shape. Tie to the top of the hat. Watch video:
