Best Yarn For A Granny Square Bag

When it comes to making a granny square bag, selecting the right yarn is crucial for achieving the perfect balance of structure, durability, and style. For my Caribbean Beach Bag, I used Dishie Cotton from WeCrochet; it’s one of the best options for this type of project.

Dishie Cotton is a 100% cotton yarn that provides just the right amount of sturdiness to hold the shape of the bag while still feeling soft and comfortable to carry. The smooth texture makes your stitches pop, and the wide range of beautiful colours allows for endless creative combinations.

Additionally, since it’s made from cotton yarn, it’s strong, easy to clean, and ideal for everyday use. If you’re looking for the best yarn to make a granny square bag that holds up and looks amazing, I highly recommend trying Dishie Cotton.

Gauge

Granny Square Size: 11 rounds equal to 9.5″ x 9.5″ with 5mm hook

Before starting your project, it’s a good idea to make a gauge swatch to ensure your tension and stitch count align with the pattern’s specifications. This is especially important when substituting yarn, as not all Worsted Weight (#4) yarns are created equal—differences in thickness, drape, and softness can significantly affect the finished look and structure of your bag.

Because of the nature of this bag design, gauge is not critical unless you want to achieve the exact same size as shown in the pattern. For matching dimensions, your finished granny square should measure approximately 9.5″ x 9.5″.

If your gauge doesn’t match:

  • Is the granny square too small? Try a larger hook.
  • Too big? Try a smaller hook.
  • You can also make small adjustments by loosening or tightening your tension, or switching to a different hook brand or style.

I’ve included a list of recommended yarn alternatives that offer similar structure and stitch definition to the original yarn, helping you achieve a consistent and polished result.

Construction

Begin by crocheting three granny squares, each with 11 rounds. Arrange the squares in a V shape and join them using a flat slip stitch seam. Next, line the interior of the bag. Once the lining is in place, fold in the two side squares to form the sides of the bag, then fold the bottom square upward and seam. Finish the construction by adding a button closure at the front and attach your strap to the ch-1 corners at the top.

Round 4:

(Ch 3, work 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in ch-1 sp, 3 dc in each sp between clusters, *(3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-1 sp, 3 dc in each sp between clusters; rep from * around, sl st in starting ch and next 2 dc, sl st in ch-1 sp. Fasten off and join new colour or continue in the same colour.

Rounds 5-11:

Rep round 4. Fasten off the first two granny squares. Leave the working yarn attached to the third square and use it for seaming. Knot and trim all yarn tails, or weave them in neatly for a clean finish.

Seaming

Using the flat slip stitch seaming technique, place the two squares side by side with the right sides facing up. With the working yarn from the first square, sl st into the ch-1 corner of the second square.

Insert your hook through the blo of the next stitch on the second square, then through the blo of the corresponding stitch on the first square. Yarn over (yo) behind the piece and pull the loop through all loops on the hook to complete a slip stitch. Continue slip stitching in this manner until you reach the corner. Sl st through the corner of the second square and the corner of the first square, then into the ch-1 corner of the third square.

Turn your work, and begin seaming the next side—joining the first square to the third square using the same flat slip stitch method. Don’t fasten off.

How To Line A Crochet Bag

Once the squares are seamed into a V shape, place them on your fabric to create the lining. Cut the fabric to match the shape, adding a 0.5″ seam allowance all around, as shown in the image.

Using an iron or steamer, fold in the 0.5″ seam allowance to create clean edges that will neatly cover the back of the granny squares. Secure the folded edges with fabric glue or by sewing.

Finally, attach the lining to the wrong side (WS) of the granny squares using fabric glue, pressing gently to adhere. Let dry completely before continuing.

Seaming

Fold the bottom square upward to form the base of the bag, creating a triangle shape. Then, fold the two side squares inward to meet at the top.

Using the working yarn, continue with the flat slip stitch seaming technique, joining the final two sides together in the same manner as before.

Fasten off and weave in any remaining tails for a neat finish.
