Versatile Crochet Pullover Pattern? Yes, please!
This design complements my Rocky Mountain Color Block Pullover, which was crocheted in fingering weight yarn. I enjoy patterns that provide versatility with various options, prompting me to develop a chunkier version of the original sweater.
The Rocky Mountain Pullover exhibits a circular yoke style, while the Chunky Color Block Pullover features a raglan style. Many of you inquire about using different yarn weights in patterns. Adapting a pattern to a different yarn weight may pose challenges for those not accustomed to modifying patterns. To ease this process, I present the Chunky Color Block pullover.

Looking for a Quick and Easy Crochet Pullover Pattern?
I assure you that this crochet pullover is the complete package. It’s chunky, speedy to create, and features a wonderfully uncomplicated stitch—truly an all-in-one pattern. The Brava Bulky weight yarn is a luxurious acrylic yarn with a beautiful drape. This sweater offers all the coziness without the overly hefty discomfort often associated with regular bulky yarns.
Crafted in a straightforward extended single crochet pattern, you’ll breeze through crafting this pullover in just a day or maybe two! Never tried your hand at making a garment? Rest assured, with this pattern’s straightforward raglan style and detailed tutorial, I believe you’ve got this!

Substituting Yarn
When substituting yarn for the Chunky Colour Block Pullover pattern, it’s important to maintain the recommended size for the perfect fit.
If needed, adjusting your crochet hook size can help you in getting the right measurements. Keep in mind that Brava Bulky has a weight of 136/100g, so consider this when selecting a different brand, as not all Bulky Weight #5s are created equal.
When choosing a substitute yarn, opt for a similar weight to the one specified in the pattern. This will provide a solid starting point for your project.
Also, it’s highly important to create a gauge swatch before you begin your project. This step will help ensure that your tension and stitch count align with the pattern’s specifications. This is an especially valuable skill, particularly when the original yarn listed in a pattern is unavailable or when yarn substitution is necessary.
Suitable Yarn Substitutes for the Crochet Pullover
Lion Brand Hue + Me – 137 yds/100g
Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky – 149 yds/100g
Premier Puzzle Yarn – 328 yds/200g
Swish Bulky – 137 yds/100g

Pattern
XS (S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X)
Notes:
The pullover is worked from the top down in the round. The collar is completed first by working in rows. It is then slip-stitched together, and the pullover begins by working around the collar’s edge.
All sizes have the same size collar and neck opening. Work pullover in rounds until the required size is reached. The pattern is written for the smallest size, with the larger sizes in parentheses ( ). If there is only 1 number, it applies to all sizes—a step-by-step video tutorial is provided on YouTube.
Collar
Notes
You can alter the width of the collar by chaining out more or fewer chains.
Row 1 (WS):
With the smaller hook and A, ch 7, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each ch across, turn—6 sts.
Row 2 (RS):
Ch 1 (not included as a st here and throughout), 1 sc in blo of each st across, turn—6 sts.
Rows 3-56:
Rep Row 2. After the final Row, ch 1, fold collar RS facing and sl st first and last rows together (work through the blo).
Flip the collar so that the seam is to the inside. Change to larger hook.
Yoke
Setup Round:
With the larger hook, ch 1, work sc sts evenly around the collar (1 st/row), sl st in the first sc to join—56 sts.
Round 1:
(Ch 3, 1 hdc in the first st) (beg V-st made), 1 esc in each of next 8 sts (right sleeve), V-st in next st, 1 esc in each of next 18 sts (front), V-st in next st, 1 esc in each of next 8 sts (left sleeve), V- st in next st, 1 esc in each of next 18 sts (back), rev sl st in the V-st to join—60 sts.
Project Tips
When slip stitching to join, keep the slip stitch loose; the last esc of every round needs to be worked into the sl st to keep the st count on track.
Round 2:
Beg V-st in ch-sp, *1 esc in each st across to V-st, V-st in V-st; rep from * around omitting last V-st, sl st in the V-st to join—68 sts.
Rounds 3-7 (9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23):
Rep Round 2, each section (sleeve, front, sleeve, back) will increase by 2 sts each round for a total of 8 sts per round, ending with—108 (124, 140, 156, 172, 188, 204, 220, 236) sts.

Separate Body and Sleeves
Setup Round:
Ch 1, 1 esc in V-st, ch 2 (underarm chs), sk sleeve section to next V-st, sk ch-1 sp, work 1 esc in each st across to the next V-st, ch 2 (underarm chs) sk over the sleeve section to the next V-st, sk ch-1 sp, work 1 esc in each st across, loosely sl st in the first esc to join—68 (76, 84, 92, 100, 108, 116, 124, 132) sts (including chs).
Body
Project Tip
When joining, use the Rev sl st technique for a discreet join.
Round 1:
Loosely sl st across first 2 chs, ch 1, 1 esc in same ch, 1 esc in each st across to chs, 1 esc in each ch across, 1 esc in each st across ending last 2 esc in previous round sl st join and next sl st, sl st in first esc to join, change to B—68 (76, 84, 92, 100, 108, 116, 124, 132) sts. Cut A.
Round 2:
With B, ch 1, 1 esc in each st around, rev sl st in first esc to join—68 (76, 84, 92, 100, 108, 116, 124, 132) sts.
Rounds 3-11:
Rep Round 2. Change to C, cut B.
Rounds 12-18:
Rep Round 2. For a longer sweater, continue working rounds.
Round 19:
Ch 1, work 1 sc in each st around, sl st in first sc to join—68 (76, 84, 92, 100, 108, 116, 124, 132) sts. Change to smaller hook.
Band
The band is joined as you go to the body edge.
Row 1:
With the smaller hook, ch 9, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, sk first st at body edge, sl st in next 2 sts (body edge), turn—8 sts.
Row 2:
Sk sl sts, 1 sc in blo of each st across, turn—8 sts.
Row 3:
Ch 1, work 1 sc in blo of each st across, sl st in next 2 sts (body edge), turn—8 sts.
Rows 4-68 (76, 84, 92, 100, 108, 116, 124, 132):
Rep Row 2 & 3 ending on Row 2. In the last Row, ch 1, with RS facing sl st band together, fasten off and weave in ends.
Sleeves
Complete left and right sleeves. The sleeve measures 18.5″ with the cuff. Try on as you go and alter the length as needed. Leave a long tail, put a slip knot on the hook, and at the underarm, join yarn in 2nd ch of ch-2 with a sl st.
Round 1:
With the larger hook and A, ch 1, esc in first ch, esc in each st around and last ch, rev sl st in first esc to join—24 (28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56) sts. Change to B, cut A. You may do an esc2tog before and after the chs to eliminate gapping at corners (see video tutorial). Use the starting tail to sew any additional gapping at the underarm.
Round 2:
With B, ch 1, esc in each st around, rev sl st in first esc to join—24 (28, 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56) sts.
Rounds 3-15:
Rep Round 2. Change to C cut B. To achieve a shorter sleeve, reduce the number of rounds worked in this section. For a more tailored fit, consider starting the decreasing process earlier. These adjustments are particularly relevant for larger sizes. Consider making a cuff swatch to see what preference of tightness around the wrist is preferred. Decrease the sleeve to the number of cuff rows.
Round 16:
With C, Rep Round 2.
Decrease
Round 17 (Dec):
Ch 1, esc2tog across first 2 sts, 1 esc in each st around to last 2 sts, esc2tog across last 2 sts, rev sl st in first esc to join—22 (26, 30, 34, 38, 42, 46, 50, 54) sts.

Rounds 20-31:
Rep Rounds 17-19, ending with—14 (18, 22, 26, 30, 34, 38, 42, 46) sts.
Round 32:
Ch 1, work 1 sc in each st around, sl st in first sc to join—14 (18, 22, 26, 30, 34, 38, 42, 46) sts. Change to smaller hook.
Cuff
The cuff is joined as you go to the sleeve edge.
Row 1:
With the smaller hook, ch 9, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, sk first st at sleeve edge, sl st in next 2 sts (sleeve edge), turn—8 sts.
