Crochet Heart Blanket and Coaster

This easy crochet heart blanket is like a two-in-one! When I first made a swatch to test how the heart pattern would work up, I realized it was the perfect size for a coaster. Naturally, I had to make a set of coasters to use around the house for Valentine’s Day! The blanket itself is so quick to work up—it only took me two days to complete. It features an adorable row of hearts at the bottom, while the rest of the blanket is made with fast and simple half double crochet stitches.

This baby blanket is perfect for the little ones in your life. My granddaughter was due for a new blanket as she’s growing so quickly, and this design is the perfect toddler-sized blanket. You can never have too many blankets! If you’d like to make a larger version, I’ve included tips for increasing the size to suit your needs.

While this pattern is classified as intermediate, the mosaic design is surprisingly simple. If you’ve never tried mosaic crochet or have felt intimidated by it, this pattern is the perfect one to start with! It features a very easy-to-follow repeat. Plus, you don’t have to commit to making the entire blanket if you’re unsure—why not try making a coaster first as a tester? These coasters are a fantastic stash-busting project, perfect for using up scrap yarn. If you decide to move on to the full blanket, you’ll find that this mosaic repeat is much simpler compared to others, making it an enjoyable and approachable project.

Pattern

Notes: To avoid using a double border, leave a long tail at the end of each row to weave in the ends, finishing the blanket with a simple and elegant picot stitch border. The pattern is written for the coaster with the baby blanket instructions in parentheses ( ).

For a larger blanket, work additional repeats of the mosaic hearts, with each repeat equal to 15 stitches. The pattern is designed to be worked in a multiple of 15 plus 2.

The coaster instructions can also be used to create a gauge swatch. I recommend using a 4.5mm hook for the coasters to achieve a tighter stitch, while the blanket’s mosaic section should be worked with a 5mm hook for optimal drape and comfort.
