Looking for a spring star stitch dishcloth crochet pattern that is quick, practical, and beautiful? You are going to love this one.

Easy skill level.

We have always loved the crochet star stitch for its texture, softness, and eye-catching detail. It creates a dense, durable fabric that works perfectly for kitchen projects. Because of that, we keep coming back to it again and again.

In fact, some of our most loved designs feature this stitch, including the Chunky Star Stitch Blanket, the Sahara Stripes Afghan, and our best-selling Little Star Baby Hat.

Now we are bringing that same beautiful texture into a free crochet dishcloth pattern that is perfect for spring.

Project Overview

The Spring Star Stitch Dishcloth features a beautifully textured star stitch that creates a soft, dimensional fabric with eye-catching detail. Crocheted in Premier Home Cotton, it is durable, absorbent, and perfect for everyday kitchen use.

A delicate picot stitch edging frames the dishcloth with a subtle decorative finish, adding a touch of charm while keeping the edges neat and structured. The pattern includes a full step-by-step video tutorial along with printable wrapped gift tags, making it ideal for gifting or market prep. Quick, practical, and satisfying to make, this timeless design is a lovely addition to any handmade kitchen collection.

Yarn Requirements

Premier Home Cotton (CDN)

Worsted Weight #4

85% Cotton, 15% Polyester, 131 yds / 71 g

Shown in Rose, Cream, Peach, and Pastel Blue

Approx 120 yards per dishcloth

Yarn Substitutes

This pattern is designed using Premier Home Cotton Yarn (cotton blend approximately 131 yds/75 g) ≈ 1.75 yds per gram.

When substituting yarn, choose a yarn with a similar weight and structure rather than matching yardage exactly. Cotton and cotton blend yarns will work best for durability and stitch definition. Adjust your hook size as needed to achieve a dense, durable fabric.

Cottage Cotton (60% cotton, 40% acrylic, ~207 yds/100 g) ≈ 2.07 yds per gram

Comfy Worsted (~109 yds/50 g, cotton acrylic blend) ≈ 2.18 yds per gram

WeCrochet Dishie Cotton (~190 yds/100 g, 100% cotton) ≈ 1.9 yds per gram

Bernat Handicrafter Cotton (CDN) (~80 yds/50 g, 100% cotton) ≈ 1.6 yds per gram

Village Yarn Craft Cotton Yarn (~115 yds/71 g, 100% cotton) ≈ 1.6 yds per gram

Lion Brand Made With Love (~185 yds/100 g, cotton blend) ≈ 1.85 yds per gram

Specials Stitches

Beg Star – Pull up a lp in the 2nd ch from hook, pull up a lp in each of the next 4 chs (or next ch and next 3 sts when working into a row), 6 loops on the hook, yo, pull through all 6 loops, ch 1 (creates the eye of the star).

Star Stitch – Pull up a lp in the eye of the previous star, pull up a loop by going through the leg of the last loop of previous star, pull up a lp in the base st of the previous star, pull up a loop in the next 2 sts, 6 loops on the hook, yo, pull through all 6 loops, ch 1.

End Star – Pull up a lp in the eye of the previous star, pull up a loop by going through the leg of the last loop of previous star, pull up a lp in the base st of the previous star, pull up a loop in the last st, 5 loops on the hook, yo, pull through all 5 loops, ch 1, turn.

Sc2tog – Insert hook into next stitch, yo and pull up a loop. Insert hook into next stitch, yo and pull up a loop. Yo and pull through all three loops on the hook.

Pro Tips for the Star Stitch

  • Keep your loops consistent in height
  • Do not pull too tight
  • Watch the “eye” of the stitch closely
  • Use an inline hook if you struggle with splitting
  • Count your loops: I like to count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 as I pull up each loop so I always end up with 6 loops on my hook before finishing the stitch
  • Stay focused: the star stitch is very structured, and even one small mistake can throw off your entire row
  • If you need to frog: go back at least one row further
    • You will need to frog the previous hdc row as well
    • Otherwise, your loops will stay stretched out, and your stitches will not sit properly

Once it clicks, this stitch becomes incredibly rhythmic and honestly a little addictive.
