The St. Patrick’s Day Gnome Crochet Pattern is a festive seasonal twist on two popular designs, combining the Rustic Farmhouse Gnome Crochet Pattern with the Simply Sweet Shamrock Applique to create a lucky, giftable St. Patrick’s Day crochet project.

What is the St. Patrick’s Day Gnome?

The St. Patrick’s Day Gnome is a seasonal crochet variation created by combining:

By changing the hat colours to classic green stripes and adding a shamrock detail, your farmhouse gnome transforms into a festive St. Patrick’s Day decoration perfect for decorating, gifting, or selling at spring craft fairs.

This lucky design is perfect whether you already own the patterns or are discovering them for the first time. Both patterns are available for free on the blog or as premium printable PDFs.

One Gnome, Endless Seasonal Variations

One of the best features of the Rustic Farmhouse Gnome Crochet Pattern is how easily it can be customized year-round.

Using the same base gnome pattern, simply change the hat colours and add themed appliques to create:

  • Valentine’s Day gnome with hearts
  • St. Patrick’s Day gnome with shamrocks
  • Spring gnome with florals
  • Fall gnome with warm neutrals
  • Christmas gnome with festive textures

This makes the Rustic Farmhouse Gnome a versatile, reusable crochet pattern that works for every season without reinventing the construction each time.

St. Patrick’s Day Gnome Yarn Details

For this St. Patrick’s Day version, the hat is worked the same as the original Rustic Farmhouse Gnome hat, with one simple colour variation.

Hat Variation

The hat follows the exact same construction as the original Rustic Farmhouse Gnome pattern.

Instead of solid colour rounds, crochet:

  • 2 rows of each colour
  • Carry the yarn up the inside by crocheting over the tails

This creates clean striped sections without fastening off between colours.

You can use any worsted-weight yarn (#4) from your stash. I used Loopys and Threads Soft Classic yarn that I had in my stash, but if I were to purchase a yarn for this project, I would go with something with better drape, like Mighty Stitch Worsted.

If purchasing new yarn, I recommend choosing a soft worsted-weight yarn with better drape rather than a stiff basic acrylic. A softer yarn will help the hat shape fall nicely.

Shamrock Applique

Follow the Simply Sweet Shamrock Applique pattern exactly as written.

All other materials, hook sizes, and construction details remain the same as listed in the original Rustic Farmhouse Gnome pattern.

How the Patterns Work Together

To make the St. Patrick’s Day Gnome:

  1. Crochet the Rustic Farmhouse Gnome exactly as written
  2. Work the striped hat variation using 2 rows per colour
  3. Crochet the Simply Sweet Shamrock Applique
  4. Sew the shamrock to the front or tip of the hat

The shamrock adds a lightweight embellishment that keeps the original structure intact while giving it a festive St. Patrick’s Day look.
