Easy Chunky Crochet Hat Pattern

I often get asked, “Can I make this pattern in a different weight?” or “How can I modify this pattern for a different yarn weight?” That’s why I love giving you all the options! This hat is a chunky version of my Takakkaw Falls Toque pattern. Granny stitch patterns are so trendy and easy to work with. After creating my Chunky Granny Pocket Shawl, I knew I HAD to make a matching hat to go with it.

This pattern began when I asked my followers what I should make with the stunning yarn I received in the mail. The yarn was Mary Maxim Marvelous Chunky, and one of the shades—New Blueberry—completely captivated me. I was obsessed and knew I had to create something quick and cozy with it!

Rounds 4 – 5 (6, 7, 8, 8):

Rep Round 3—14 (15, 16, 17, 18) clusters.

Decrease Rounds

Not all sizes will end evenly with a decrease; be sure to place clusters in the remaining spaces after the last decrease.

(Beg cluster) in first sp between clusters, (cluster) in next sp between clusters, cluster decrease across next 2 sps, * (cluster) in next 2 sps between clusters, cluster decrease across next 2 sps; rep from * around 2 (2, 3, 3, 3) times, work clusters in remaining 2 (3, 0, 1, 2) sps, sl st in 3rd ch of ch-3 to join, turn—11 (12, 12, 13, 14) clusters.

Round 3:

Cluster decrease (beg decrease will start with ch 3) across next 2 sps around, adult will end with 1 cluster in last sp sl st in 3rd ch of ch-3 to join—4 (4, 4, 5, 5) clusters. Fasten off with a long tail for weaving.

Finishing

Using a yarn needle, thread the tail through the flo of each stitch around the top of the hat. Gently pull the yarn to tighten and close the opening. Weave the yarn around the stitches to secure the end, then back in the opposite direction. This will ensure a snug finish and prevent any unravelling.

PomPom – Watch the tutorial for yarn pompom instructions

Make a yarn pom pom or attach a faux fur pom pom. Sew snap to the top of the hat. Blow-dry pom to fluff and snap to the top of the hat. Use a 5-6″ pompom for child and adult hats and a 4.3″ pom pom for toddler and baby hats. Hats are shown with a 1.5″ square personalized faux leather tag. Attach with embroidery thread.

Washing Instructions

Before washing, remove the pompom. Refer to the yarn label for washing instructions. It’s recommended to gently hand wash the hat using a mild detergent or wool wash. Afterwards, carefully lay it flat to dry.
