For the ultimate crochet Santa hat, we highly recommend using WeCrochet Mighty Stitch worsted yarn, worked with 2 strands held together. This yarn is truly a crafting superhero! Made with 20% Superwash Wool and 80% Acrylic, it combines the best of both worlds – the warmth and softness of wool with the easy care of acrylic.

The Mighty Stitch yarn is perfect for creating garments, accessories, and blankets, adding a touch of luxury to your projects. With its wide range of gorgeous hues, you’ll have no trouble finding the perfect festive colour for your Santa hat. For the brim of your Santa hat and pompom, we recommend using WeCrochet Fable Fur yarn. This fluffy and luxurious yarn will add a touch of whimsy and softness to your hat’s brim. Substituting Yarn

Yarn substitution is a valuable skill for crocheters, allowing you to achieve your desired results even when the original yarn specified in a pattern is unavailable.

In the Bulky & Quick Santa Crochet Hat pattern, Mighty Worsted Weight #4 yarn is used and doubled to create a bulky weight yarn. However, if you prefer, you can substitute it with other light-worsted yarns and double them as well. Alternatively, you can opt for a bulky weight yarn and use just a single strand.

I have compiled a list of suitable alternatives below to aid you in the yarn substitution process. It is crucial to conduct a gauge swatch using your selected yarn and adjust your hook size accordingly to achieve the pattern’s specified gauge for accurate sizing. This step is vital to ensure that the final hat turns out as intended and fits perfectly.

Please refer to the substitution list and carefully follow the recommended gauge swatching process to achieve the best possible results with your chosen yarn.

Construction

The Santa hat is worked from the top down. Start by creating a magic ring and gradually increase each round until you reach the desired size. After completing the necessary increase rounds, continue working the non-increase rounds to maintain the hat’s size. Finish by crocheting the brim in fur yarn. For the pom pom, use the fur yarn to create a rectangle, seam it into a ball shape, and stuff it with polyester fiberfill. Attach the pom pom securely to the top of the hat.

Gauge

Hat: 10 sts and 9 rows equal to 4″ with 7mm hook in esc

Fur Brim:

Ch 1, 1 sc in each st around, sl st in first sc to join—34 (38, 40, 42, 46, 48) sts. Last round fasten off and weave in tails.

Pom Pom:

Create pom poms of different sizes by adjusting the number of chains and rounds worked. Watch the video tutorial for additional guidance.

Row 1:

With fur yarn, Ch 15 (15, 17, 17, 19, 19), 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in ch across, turn—14 (14, 16, 16, 18, 18) sts.

Row 2- 5 (5, 6, 7, 8, 8):

Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn—14 (14, 16, 16, 18, 18) sts. Don’t fasten off.

Assembly:

To assemble the pom pom, fold the rectangle in half and slip stitch the side edges of the rows together. Fasten off with a tail. Use a yarn needle to weave the yarn around approximately every third stitch, pulling it tightly to close the bottom of the pom pom. Weave the needle through the stitches and trim any excess yarn. Stuff the pom pom with polyester fiberfill to give it a plump shape. Next, knot a long tail to the open edge of the pom pom. With the yarn needle, weave the yarn through every third stitch and gently pull it to close the pom pom. Finally, finish by weaving the needle through the stitches and attach to the top of the hat. Knot and trim tails.

Washing Instructions:

To care for your crochet hat, carefully hand wash it using a mild detergent or wool wash. After washing, gently reshape the hat and lay it flat to dry, preferably on a towel or a drying rack. Avoid wringing or twisting the hat, as it may cause damage to the crochet stitches.
