Special Stitches

Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): Yo, insert your hook from front to back to front around the post of the next stitch; yo, pull up a loop; yo, pull through 2 loops on your hook; yo, pull through the remaining two loops on your hook.

2-over-2 left cross front post double cable (2/2 L fpdc): Skip next 2 stitches, fpdc around next 2 stitches, working in front of fpdc just made, fpdc around first skipped stitch, and next skipped stitch.

A woman wearing a pink crochet beanie adorned with two large fur pom-poms smiles and adjusts her hat while standing indoors. She is dressed in a gray ribbed top.

Techniques – Magic Ring

Step 1: Wrap the yarn around your index finger 3 times.

Step 2: Insert your hook under all three loops, grabbing the first loop with the hook and pulling it through.

Step 3: Chain to secure the ring, chaining 1 for hdc.

Step 4: Work pattern stitches in the ring (for example, 10 hdc).

Step 5: Pull the yarn tail slightly; it will only pull in one loop. Grab the loop that is being pulled and tighten it, then pull the tail tight so that both loops are snug.

Step 6: Finally, slip stitch in the first stitch to join.

Construction

The Beanie is constructed from the top down, starting with front post double crochet stitches and increasing to the required stitch count for your chosen size. After reaching the correct stitch count, work the cable pattern rounds. Next, add a join-as-you-go ribbed band using single crochet in the back loop only. Finish the beanie by attaching your preferred pom poms and any labels for personalization.

Crochet Beanie Pattern:

0-6mth (6-12mth, Toddler, Child, Adult, Large Adult)

The crochet hat pattern is written for the smallest size, with the larger sizes in parentheses ( ). All sizes start the same, then follow the indicated sizes for additional increase rounds. Due to the significant increase in the pattern, the top of the hat may initially wave or curl, but this will smooth out as you work several rounds of the pattern. If there is only one number listed, it applies to all sizes. A step-by-step video tutorial for the 0-6 month size is available on YouTube. The crochet pattern is worked in multiples of 6, so to create a larger size, increase the hat size by adding stitches in increments of 6.

Pom Pom

Make a yarn pom pom or attach a faux fur pom pom. To secure one pom pom, sew a snap to the top of the hat; for two pom poms, place snaps on the top sides. Use a blow dryer to fluff the pom pom. For child and adult sizes, a 5-6″ pom pom works well, while a 4.3″ pom pom is ideal for baby and toddler sizes. Remember to remove the pom poms before washing the hat. Hats are shown with various styles of tags from brickbubble.ca for a personalized touch.

For washing instructions. It’s recommended to gently hand wash the hat using a mild detergent or wool wash. Afterwards, carefully lay it flat to dry.
