Construction

The Cardigan is worked from the side across. Front and Back panels are worked as one piece. The sleeves and pockets are worked from the side across separately and then seamed to the garment. The pattern is written for the smallest size with larger sizes in parenthesis ( ). The starting chain is not included as a stitch. If there is only 1 number, it applies to all sizes. Child and Adult patterns are written separately. Complete each step in order. Stitch markers are added throughout the pattern to assist in seaming. Medium-size video tutorial included.

Right Side – worked from the side across

Row 1 (RS):

Ch 140, work 1 hdc in the back bump of the 3rd ch from the hook and in each ch across, turn—138 sts. Add a removable st marker at the 69th and 70th st to mark centre shoulder for seaming.

Row 2 (WS):

Ch 1, work 1 hdc in the flo of each st across, turn—138 sts.

Rows 3-7 (9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21):

Rep Row 2.

Row 8 (10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22):

Ch 1, work 1 hdc in the flo of each of the next 69 sts, leave remaining sts unworked (for neck), turn—69 sts.

Centre Back

Collar:

The collar is joined as you go to the edging.

Join yarn to bottom right edge, ch 27, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, sk first st at the edge, sl st in next 2 sts, turn—26 sts.

Row 2:

Sk sl sts, 1 sc in the flo of each st across, turn—26 sts.

Row 3:

Ch 1, work 1 sc in the flo of each st across, sl st in next 2 sts, turn—26 sts.

For the entire edge of the cardigan. Fasten off and weave in tails.

Sleeves:

Make 2 – worked from the side across

Row 1 (RS):

Ch 49, 1 sc in the back bump of the 2nd ch from hook and the next 9 chs, 1 hdc in the back bump of the remaining 38 chs, turn— 48 sts.

Row 2:

Ch 1, work 1 hdc in the flo of each of the next 38 sts, work 1 sc in the flo of each of the next 10 sts, turn—48 sts.

Row 3:

Ch 1, work 1 sc in the flo of each of the next 10 sts, work 1 hdc in the flo of each st across, turn—48 sts.

Rows 4-15 (4-17, 4-19, 4-21, 4-23, 4-27, 4-29, 4-31):

Rep Row 2 & 3. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for seaming. Weave in other end. Add a removable stitch marker to the centre of the sleeve on the 8th (9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th, 16th) row.

Seaming:

Match up sleeve stitch markers to shoulder stitch markers, with RS facing, seam sleeves to body, slightly stretching the sleeves.

With RS facing, fold the body in half at shoulders and seam sides and sleeves with a whip st or preferred seaming method.

Pockets:

Make 2

Row 1 (RS):

Ch 17, work 1 sc in the back bump of the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—16 sts.

Row 2:

Ch 1, work 1 sc in the flo of each st across, turn—16 sts.

Rows 3-9 (11):

Rep the last row 7 times XS, and all other sizes 9 more times. After the last row turn, sc evenly down the side of the pocket working 3 sc in the corner, turn and work across the bottom of the pocket, working 3 sc in the corner, and turn and sc evenly up the side of the pocket, leaving the top unfinished. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for seaming. Weave in the other end.

Seam Pockets to each front panel next to the collar seam and approximately 1″ from the bottom edge. The unfinished edge is the top of the pocket and is left open. Weave in ends. Add a personalized garment tag to finish your piece.

Lightly steam to finish and prevent the collar from curling. Steam a few inches away from the fabric so that you don’t melt the acrylic.
