Project Overview

The Cabot Trail Cardigan is crocheted flat in one piece with minimal seaming using a beautiful cluster lace stitch pattern. This loose fitting cardigan features full length sleeves and a lightweight design that is perfect for layering in moderate temperatures. Crochet Lace Stitch

The crochet stitches used to make the Cabot Trail Cardigan include the single crochet, double crochet, chains and the 3 dc cluster crochet stitches. These crochet stitches combined create a beautiful lace stitch pattern.  The crochet lace stitch is an easy 2-row repeat, with the help of the video tutorial you can easily catch on to crocheting this stitch. The fit is oversized, with loose-fitting sleeves that can easily be adjusted to any length.  Also, the bodice can be customized to any length. The entire lace stitch cardigan is crocheted in one piece making it the perfect crochet top design for beginners.

How to Block a Crochet Project

  1. Soak the entire garment in lukewarm water with a small amount of dish soap or wool wash.
  2. Allow the garment to soak for about 30 minutes.
  3. Gently squeeze out excess water.
  4. Wrap the garment in a towel to remove more water.
  5. Lay the garment out on blocking mats/foam mats or blocking boards
  6. Carefully pin it to the schematic measurements for your size.
  7. Let the garment dry completely, this may take 24-48 hours.

Crochet Lace Cardigan Construction

The Cardigan is worked in one piece flat starting at the back band and finishing with the front panels. The sleeve cuffs and collar ribbing are then added. The smaller hook is used for the ribbing and a larger hook for the lace stitch.

Gauge

17.25 sts and 8.25 rows = 4″ blocked in lace pattern with 4.5mm hook

10 sts and 9 rows = 2″ blocked in sc blo with 4mm hook

If you’re seeing the message “Email subscription failed, please try again”, don’t worry — it’s usually an easy fix! Here are a few quick things to try:
First, double-check your login details. Make sure you’re signing in with the same email you originally used to create your Grow account. If you’re not sure, click “Forgot Password” to reset your login. Once you’ve updated it, return to my site and try again.
Next, clear your browser’s cache and cookies. Sometimes the login just gets stuck. You can also try opening the page in a private or incognito window, or switching to another browser like Chrome, Safari, or Firefox to see if that does the trick.
It also helps to make sure you’re logged into Grow directly. Visit https://grow.me and sign in there first. Once you’re logged in, come back to my site and refresh the page — your pattern should unlock automatically.
If you’re still having trouble, check your browser’s privacy settings. Grow needs cookies to verify your account, so make sure cookies and cross-site tracking are allowed. On iPhone, go to Settings → Safari → Privacy & Security, then turn off “Prevent Cross-Site Tracking” and “Block All Cookies.” On Android or Chrome, go to Settings → Site Settings → Cookies and select “Allow all cookies.”
Lastly, ad blockers or browser extensions can sometimes block the login pop-up. Try turning them off temporarily while you sign in. If nothing seems to work, log out of Grow completely by going to https://grow.me, selecting your profile icon, and choosing Log Out. Then come back to my site and try logging in again.

XS (S/M, L, XL, 2X/3X, 4X, 5X)

Notes:

The cardigan is worked in one piece Flat from the bottom up, starting at the back. The bands and edging are worked with a 4mm hook and the body with a 4.5mm hook. A chain is worked out from each side of the body for the sleeves. The sleeves and body are worked as one piece. The neck opening is marked, next half of the sleeve is worked with each front panel. Fasten off once the sleeve is at the correct width. The front body is marked, then worked, finishing with the band. Block and seam to finish. The pattern is written for the smallest size with larger sizes in parentheses ( ). A step-by-step video tutorial is provided on our YouTube channel for size small/medium.

Stitch Pattern

Worked in multiples of 6 plus 1. Proceed to the back to begin the pattern.

Guage Swatch, Ch 24

Row 1 (RS):

With larger hook, work 1 sc in 8th ch from hook (counts as dc, ch 2), ch 1, sk ch, work 1 sc in next ch, *ch 5, sk 3 chs, work 1 sc in next ch, ch 1, sk ch, work 1 sc in next ch; rep from * across until 2 chs remain, ch 2, sk ch, work 1 dc in last ch, turn.

Row 2 (WS):

Ch 1 (not included as a st here and throughout), work 1 sc in first st, ch 3, sk sc, work 1 cluster in ch-1 sp, *ch 3, sk sc, work 1 sc in 3rd ch of ch-5, ch 3, sk sc, work 1 cluster in ch-1 sp; rep from * across, end with ch 3, sk sc, work 1 sc in turning ch, turn.

Band

Row 1:

With the smaller hook, ch 11, work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—10 sts.

Row 2:

Ch 1 (not included as a st here and throughout), work 1 sc in the blo of each st across, turn—10 sts.

Rows 3-79 (91, 103, 115, 127, 139, 151):

Rep Row 2. After the final Row, turn and change to the larger hook.

With the larger hook, ch 1 and work sc sts evenly along the length of the band (1 st per row)—79 (91, 103, 115, 127, 139, 151) sts.

Body

Stitch Pattern begins

Row 1 (RS):

With larger hook, ch 5 (counts as dc, ch 2), sk first 2 sts, work 1 sc in next st, ch 1, sk st, work 1 sc in next st, *ch 5, sk 3 sts, work 1 sc in next st, ch 1, sk st, work 1 sc in next st; rep from * across until 2 sts remain, ch 2, sk st, work 1 dc in last st, turn—13 (15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25) ch-1 sps.

Rows 2 – 44:

Rep Stitch Pattern Rows 2 & 3, Rep Row 2 [1 more time]. Ending on WS with—13 (15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25) clusters. Leave working loop for back right sleeve.

Sleeves:

Notes: The pattern is written for sleeve 15″ in length. To adjust the sleeve length reduce or increase the chain by 6 sts (approx 1.5″).

Back Left Sleeve:

With RS facing and separate ball of yarn, join to top left side of work with a sl st, ch 60 and fasten off (this sets up the left sleeve for lace stitch pattern).

Back Right Sleeve:

Join back onto the working yarn loop top right. Chain 65 and proceed to Row 1.

Row 1 (RS):

Mark Neck Opening:

With RS facing, from outside sleeve count over 16 (17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22) clusters, pm in the cluster. Rep for the left and right sides. Work is separated at this point. Work Front Right side then work Front Left. The neck opening should measure approximately 4″ and should be 3 cluster sts.

Front Right Sleeve:

Row 1 (RS):

With working yarn, ch 5, work 1 sc in 3rd ch of ch-3, ch 1, sk cluster, work 1 sc first ch of ch-3, * ch 5, sk next sc, work 1 sc in 3rd ch of ch-3, ch 1, sk cluster, work 1 sc in the first ch of ch-3; rep from * across, end with ch 2, work 1 dc in last sc, before marker (leave remaining sts unworked), turn—15 (16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21) ch-1 sps.

Rows 2 – 14 (16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26)

With RS facing, from outside sleeve count over 10 clusters, place marker in next sc.

Sk sl sts, 1 sc in the blo of each st across, turn—10 sts.

Row 3:

Rows 4- 30 (36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66):

Rep Row 2 & 3, ending on row 2. The last Row fasten off and weave in tails.

Front Left Sleeve:

With working yarn, ch 5, work 1 sc in 3rd ch of ch-3, ch 1, sk cluster, work 1 sc first ch of ch-3, * ch 5, sk next sc, work 1 sc in 3rd ch of ch-3, ch 1, sk cluster, work 1 sc in first ch of ch-3; rep from * across, end with ch 2, work 1 dc in marked sc, turn—5 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11) ch-1 sps.

Rows 2 – 44:

Rep Stitch Pattern Rows 2 & 3, Rep Row 2 [1 more time]. Ending on WS. Ending with—5 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11) clusters. Change to the smaller hook.

Band

Work the same as Right Front Band.

Sleeve Cuff:

Repeat for left and right sleeves.

Sleeve Edge:

With RS facing and the larger hook join yarn to the edge of sleeve, ch 1, work 1 sc per row across, turn 28 (32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52) sts. Change to the smaller hook.

Band

The band is joined as you go to the sleeve edge.

Row 1:

With smaller hook, ch 11, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, sk first st at the sleeve edge, sl st in next 2 sts (sleeve edge), turn—10 sts.

Row 2:

Sk sl sts, 1 sc in the blo of each st across, turn—10 sts.

Row 3:

Ch 1, work 1 sc in the blo of each st across, sl st in next 2 sts (sleeve edge), turn—10 sts.

Rows 4- 28 (32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52):

Rep Row 2 & 3 ending on Row 2. After the last row fasten off with a long tail for seaming.

Edging:

Row 1:

With the smaller hook join yarn to front right panel edge with a sl st, ch 1, work 1 sc evenly across the band and front right panel, (approx 2 sts per row), sc across the neck opening (2 sc in ch-3 sp, 1 sc in each st), sc evenly across the front left panel and band. Make sure to have the same number of sts on each side.

Rows 2-5:

Ch 1, work 1 sc in each st across, turn. The last row fasten off and weave in tails.

Blocking:

Wet the entire garment in lukewarm water with a small amount of dish soap or woolwash. Allow soaking for around 25-30 min. Squeeze out as much water as possible. Wrap the garment in a towel to press out the excess water. Lay the garment out on blocking mats and pin it to the schematic measurements. Allow the garment to dry thoroughly.

Seaming:

Repeat for the Left and Right Sides. Fold garment RS facing lining up sides and sleeves (make sure the lace pattern is lined up). With yarn needle and yarn, whip stitch sleeve and sides together. Weave in ends.
