A Closer Look at Colour Phasing in the Halo Hugs V-Neck Pullover
The Halo Hugs V-Neck Pullover was designed using a long colour-phasing yarn, which means the finished sweater will naturally vary from size to size. This is expected behaviour when working with yarns that have long, gradual colour transitions and a large amount of yardage per ball.
Colour-phasing yarns are designed so that the centre of the cake begins with the darkest shade in the colourway and gradually fades out toward the lightest shade. Because different sweater sizes require different amounts of yarn, the point at which colour transitions appear will vary by size. An extra small, medium, or 3X sweater could all look slightly different even when following the exact same pattern.
The easiest way to work with this yarn in the Halo Hugs Pullover is to let the colour flow naturally. When you complete the yoke, ensure both sleeves are joined in the same colour at the arm opening. From there, you continue crocheting and let the yarn do its work. When you reach the end of a ball, join the next ball using the same colour you ended with so the transition stays smooth and consistent.
If you are working on a larger size, you may see the colour shift from dark to light and then transition again. This is part of the design and one of the reasons this yarn was chosen. The long fades create movement and depth across the fabric, and no two sweaters will be identical.
That said, if you love the exact look of the sample sweater and would like to replicate it more closely in your own size, you do have options. You can separate the colours from your cakes and control where each shade appears. Because the Halo Hugs Pullover uses a simple half-double crochet stitch pattern and does not require intentional colour changes, the process is very manageable. It does require some extra preparation, but not much additional complexity.
Ultimately, the Halo Hugs V-Neck Pullover is designed to give makers flexibility. You can let the yarn flow naturally for a one-of-a-kind result, control the colour placement for a specific look, or work the sweater in a solid yarn if you prefer a completely uniform finish. All of these options are valid and will result in a beautiful sweater.

Substituting Yarn
When substituting the recommended yarn, choose one that meets the pattern gauge and has a similar yardage-to-weight ratio. Caron Colorama Halo Perfect Phasing has a yardage-to-gram ratio of approximately 2.1 yards per gram. Yarns with a lower ratio may produce a denser fabric and require hook size adjustment. Always check your gauge. Caron Colorama 481 yds ÷ 227 g = 2.12 yds per gram
Suitable Substitutes
- Bag O Day Tonal Hues (~280 yds / 150 g, 100% acrylic) = 1.87 yds per gram (CDN)
- Premier Basix Trendy (~250 yds / 140 g, 100% acrylic) = 1.79 yds per gram (CDN)
- Premier Anti Pilling Gradient (~360 yds / 200 g, 100% acrylic) = 1.80 yds per gram
- Lion Brand Mandala Gradient (~295 yds / 150 g, acrylic blend) = 1.97 yds per gram
- Big Twist Ombre Value (~269 yds / 121 g, 100% acrylic) = 2.22 yds per gram

- Caron Latte Cakes (~530 yds / 257 g, 58% acrylic, 42% nylon) = 2.06 yds per gram
- Katech Ombre Yarn (~410yds / 200 g, 80% acrylic, 20% nylon) = 2.05 yds per gram
Note:
Yarns without a halo will produce more stitch definition and a firmer fabric, while brushed or fuzzy yarns will create a softer, more relaxed drape. Colour changes and gradient length will vary by brand and may differ from the sample shown.
