The Yarn

Crocheted yarn and crochet hooks on a white surface creating a cozy hooded lamb blanket.

The yarn used to make the Crochet Hooded Lamb Blanket is Bernat Softee Chunky Super Bulky Weight yarn from Mary Maxim. Bernat Softee Chunky is 100% Acrylic and a lighter Super Bulky yarn. You can find a large selection of colours at an affordable price below.

Substitutes

If you’re looking for a yarn substitute I’ve listed a few that I think will work well. Make sure to meet the pattern gauge of 7 sts & 4.5 Rows = 4″ in pattern with 10mm hook

It’s hard to find a Super Bulky Weight substitute for this yarn because most are thicker and bulkier than Bernat Softee chunky. The easiest sub is to use 2 strands of worsted weight yarn. Here are a few of my favourites.

Bernat Super Value

Red Heart Super Saver

Brava Worsted

The Hook

I love crocheting with my Streamline Hooks from Furls. They are light and easy to work with. I especially love the large crochet hooks. They are so nice to work with and I can crochet for hours without hand pain. I used the Aries 10mm crochet hook and the Taurus 6.5mm for the Crochet Hooded Lamb Blanket. Use code MJS15 for 15% off.

Construction

The blanket is worked from the bottom up using 1 strand of super bulky yarn and a 10mm hook. The Hood is worked continuously from the blanket and sewn to form the hood. You may substitute worsted-weight yarn for this pattern, use 2 strands for the equivalent bulkiness and double the yardage required. The pattern is written for the smallest size with larger sizes in parentheses ( ). Up, and the hood is worked separately, then sewn to the top of the blanket. Turning ch doesn’t count as a stitch.

Techniques

Magic Ring – See video Tutorial – https://youtu.be/QMZpO5-19hQ

Loop Stitch – Go through the indicated stitch, hold the working yarn with the index finger, place hook over the yarn, insert hook under the yarn to the front, grab the yarn to the back and pull through stitch, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook.

Puff Stitch – Yarn Over (YO), draw up a loop, 4 times in space, YO draw through 8 loops on the hook, YO draw through last 2 loops on the hook.

Seamless Join – After the last stitch of the round, fasten off. With a yarn needle, weave under both loops of the first st, then weave through the blo of the last stitch. Weave in tail.
