Crochet is a craft that uses a single hook to create loops of yarn that are pulled through one another to form fabric. Each stitch is worked one at a time, which makes crochet very forgiving and easy to adjust as you go.
Because you’re only working with one active stitch at a time, crochet is easier to pause, pick back up, and fix than many other fibre crafts. If something doesn’t look right, you can simply pull back a few stitches and try again.
Unlike knitting, which uses two needles and keeps many stitches live at once, crochet uses one hook and usually works with a single active loop. This is one of the reasons crochet is often recommended for beginners.

Why Crochet Is So Beginner-Friendly
Crochet is especially approachable if you’re brand new to yarn crafts.
Here’s why many beginners choose crochet first:
- You only need one hook
- Mistakes are easy to undo
- Stitches are clearly visible
- Projects grow quickly
- You can learn at your own pace
I see this all the time in my community. People worry they’re doing something wrong when, in reality, crochet just takes a bit of repetition and patience at the beginning.
My Experience Learning to Crochet
I didn’t grow up crocheting. I actually learned how to crochet when my daughter was taking a learn-to-crochet and knit class at school. I had a little bit of knitting experience, but crochet was completely new to me, and I wanted to learn alongside her.
At the time, I purchased a CD-ROM from Walmart and started teaching myself the stitches. Learning how to hold the hook and yarn was by far the most challenging part. It took a lot of practice, patience, and perseverance. I spent a lot of time making small swatches, pulling them back, and starting again.
Once I became more comfortable holding the hook and yarn, I really wanted to make something I could actually use. That’s when I turned to YouTube. I’m a visual learner, and watching someone crochet made everything click much faster for me.
That combination — practising the basics and learning visually — is exactly how this course is structured.

What Can You Make With Crochet?
One of the things I love most about crochet is its versatility. With the same basic stitches, you can create an incredible variety of projects.
Here are just a few things you can make with crochet:
- Blankets and throws
- Hats, scarves, and mittens
- Sweaters, cardigans, and tops
- Baby items
- Bags and accessories
- Home decor
- Toys and amigurumi
When I was first learning, I started by making simple hats for my kids. In the early 2010s, character hats were extremely popular, and that’s where I spent a lot of time practising my stitches and learning how patterns worked.
Why Crochet Has Become So Popular Again
Crochet has seen a huge resurgence in recent years, especially with modern garments like granny-stitch and granny-square cardigans making a strong comeback.
There are a few reasons crochet continues to grow in popularity:
- Trend-driven garments and accessories
- The rise of amigurumi, especially with younger makers
- Easy access to video tutorials for visual learners
- The ability to create wearable, useful items
There are more learning opportunities now than when I started, making crochet more accessible than ever.

Crochet as More Than a Craft
For many people, crochet becomes more than just a hobby.
I’ve seen how crochet:
- Helps reduce stress and anxiety
- Creates a calming bedtime routine
- Gives a sense of accomplishment
- Allows you to create meaningful gifts
When life felt busy and overwhelming, especially when my kids were young, crochet became something grounding for me. Creating something with your hands is incredibly rewarding.
