What yarn is best for a crochet coatigan?

When it comes to choosing the best yarn for your crochet Coatigan, there are a few factors to consider. First and foremost, you want a yarn that will provide warmth and coziness. This is especially important for a garment like a Coatigan, designed to keep you comfortable in colder weather.

One option that I highly recommend is the Upcycle alpaca blend. This particular yarn is a fantastic choice due to its wool, acrylic, and alpaca composition. The wool and alpaca fibers offer excellent insulation properties, providing warmth without adding excessive bulk. Meanwhile, the addition of acrylic ensures durability and softness.

The blend of these fibers creates a luxurious and practical yarn for a crochet coatigan. It has a beautiful drape and a soft, snuggly feel against the skin. The wool content adds a natural elasticity that helps the crochet coatigan maintain its shape over time.

In terms of colour options, the Upcycle Alpaca blend offers a variety of shades to choose from. Whether you prefer classic neutrals, vibrant jewel tones, or soothing pastels, there is a colour that will perfectly complement your style and taste.

Overall, when selecting yarn for your crochet coatigan, prioritize comfort, warmth, durability, and sustainability. The Upcycle alpaca blend checks all these boxes and will undoubtedly enhance your crochet experience while providing you with a gorgeous and cozy coatigan to enjoy throughout the colder seasons.

Substituting yarn

Yarn substitution is an essential skill for crocheters, allowing them to achieve the desired results even when the original yarn listed in a pattern is unavailable. For instance, the River Stone Crochet Coatigan pattern uses WeCrochet Upcycle Alpaca, a worsted weight (4) yarn made of 33% Alpaca, 34% Wool, and 33% Acrylic. This yarn is soft enough for next-to-skin wear and rugged enough to keep you warm all winter long. However, since Upcycle is made with recycled fibers that vary in size, causing slight variations in yarn thickness from skein to skein, it is recommended to swatch before starting a project.

If you want to substitute the yarn for this pattern, you can find a list of suitable alternatives on the next page. However, doing a gauge swatch with your chosen yarn and adjusting your hook size accordingly to achieve the pattern’s specified gauge for correct sizing is crucial. This will ensure that the final garment turns out as intended.

Crochet Coatigan Construction

Create your granny square motifs by crocheting them in the round. Make the required number of squares for your desired size and then seam them together using the whip stitch join method, following the size diagrams. Choose your size based on the desired finished measurements.

Techniques

Seamless Join – After the last stitch of the round, fasten off. With a yarn needle, weave under both loops of the first st, then weave through the blo of the last stitch. Weave in tail.

Simple I-cord – Crochet the cord by working with the yarn tail and working yarn. Place the yarn tail to the front of your work and the working yarn to the back. Yo with the tail going from front to back, yo with the working yarn pulling through 2 loops on the hook. Repeat making the cord as long as needed.

Block Squares:

Directions for Blocking Crochet Granny Squares:

  • Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water and add a small amount of soak wash. Alternatively, use a spray bottle to dampen the squares.
  • Allow the squares to soak for 25-30 minutes.
  • Remove the squares from the water and gently squeeze out the excess water.
  • Use a blocking peg board or blocking mats with measuring lines to block the squares to a 4″ measurement. Pin the squares to the board or mats.
  • Allow the squares to fully dry before removing them from the peg board or mats. This usually takes 2-4 hours, but the drying time may vary depending on the size of the squares.
  • It is suggested to batch block as you go to save time and effort.

Seaming:

Refer to the diagram for the size you are working. Seam all squares together using the whip stitch join method. If you need assistance in this process, please check out our informative video tutorial for added support.

When joining your crochet squares together for the River Stone Coatigan, you can follow these steps:

  • Start by placing two squares with the right sides facing each other.
  • Cut yarn three times the length of squares that will be seamed together and thread it onto a yarn needle.
  • Go through the ch-1 sp corner twice to secure.
  • Work the yarn needle through the flo of the first square and the blo of the second square, completing a whip stitch. The unworked loops of the stitch should be to the inside.
  • Work in this manner across, ending by going through the ch-1 corner twice.
  • Continue joining as many squares as you can without fastening off.
  • Continue until all squares are joined and weave in the tails.
