Best Yarn for a Crochet Headband

For a crochet headband, I highly recommend using acrylic, an acrylic blend, or wool. I would avoid cotton, as it lacks elasticity and tends to stretch out over time. Acrylic is usually the most affordable option, but if you’re looking for a more premium yarn, I suggest choosing a wool with good stretch and elasticity.

I used Brava Speckle, a unique and stunning premium acrylic yarn.

You’ll notice that the finished measurements of your headband are a few inches smaller than your head size. This is intentional! Headbands stretch with wear, so always incorporate negative ease to ensure a snug and long-lasting fit.

Row 3:

Rows 4 – 12 (16, 20, 24, 24, 24):

Rep rows 2 & 3, ending on row 2.

Rows 13 (17, 21, 25, 25, 25):

Ch 1, 1 sc in the blo of each st across, turn—58 (64, 70, 76, 82, 88) sts.

Finishing

Last row fasten off with a tail for seaming.

For the best fit, it’s important to refer to the finished measurements, as slight variations in yarn thickness and gauge can affect the length and width of the headband. You may need to add or reduce rows to achieve the correct measurement.

Seaming

With the right side facing, hold each end of the headband and fold the ends in half. Position the folded ends together, making sure the starting tail is to the inside of the layers (leaving it exposed for knotting) and the ending tail is on the outside edge for seaming. Using a yarn needle, seam all four layers of the folded ends together. Once you’ve finished seaming, weave in the yarn tails and knot tails, then trim any excess. For a visual demonstration, please refer to the accompanying video.
