Yarn Substitutes

The sample uses Bernat Softee Chunky, a Super Bulky Weight 6 yarn with approximately 1.08 yds per gram (108 yds per 100 g).

When substituting, choose a Super Bulky yarn with a similar ratio, ideally 1.05–1.15 yds per gram, to maintain thickness and finished size. Always swatch and adjust hook size to meet gauge.

If needed, you may hold two strands of Worsted Weight (#4) yarn together to achieve a comparable super bulky thickness. Swatch and treat it as a new yarn when checking gauge.

Project Tips

  • The afghan is worked flat from the side across in long rows using the Offset Winterberry Stitch.
  • The first five rows and the final five rows form the side borders of the blanket.
  • The first five stitches and last five stitches of every row form the top and bottom borders and are worked in single crochet in the front loop only.
  • Place stitch markers in the first five stitches and the last five stitches of each row to clearly mark the border sections. This provides a visual cue to switch to front-loop-only single crochet and eliminates the need to count as you work.
  • Check your stitch placement regularly to ensure the treble crochet stitches remain properly offset. Misplaced stitches can cause the textured pattern to shift.
  • Maintain even tension and count your stitches at the end of each row to keep edges straight and borders consistent.

Finishing

This blanket does not require traditional wet blocking. To shape, lightly mist and lay flat to finished measurements. Smooth the borders and pin if needed. Allow to dry completely.

For added structure, wash according to the yarn label instructions, then lay flat, reshape, and pin to prevent curling.

You may lightly steam to relax the borders. Hold the iron several inches above the fabric and do not allow it to touch the stitches. Acrylic fibres can melt or permanently flatten when exposed to high heat.

Do not stretch aggressively, as this may distort the textured stitch pattern.
