A Modern Overlay Mosaic Crochet Blanket with Stunning Texture
The Butterfly Kisses Mosaic Blanket is a bold and modern crochet design worked using the overlay mosaic crochet technique, creating beautiful butterfly motifs with clean, graphic texture.

This blanket was designed by my daughter Emma for her daughter Rose, and it turned into such a stunning piece that we knew we had to share it.
If you love structured stitches, strong contrast, and eye-catching designs, this is a pattern you’ll want to make.

Project Overview
The Butterfly Kisses Mosaic Blanket is worked in overlay mosaic crochet using two colours to create rows of striking butterfly motifs. Red Heart Super Saver Ombre creates a beautiful gradient effect through the butterflies, while a contrasting white background makes the design pop.
The blanket is finished with a clean double border that neatly encloses all of the mosaic tails, eliminating the need to weave in ends. The pattern includes written instructions, a chart, and a step-by-step overlay mosaic tutorial video to guide you through the technique with confidence.

What is Overlay Mosaic Crochet?
Overlay mosaic crochet is a technique that creates detailed patterns using simple stitches.
- Worked one row at a time (right side only)
- No colour changes within the row
- Uses single crochet (blo) and mosaic double crochet (mdc)
- Creates bold, textured designs
The butterfly motif in this blanket is created by working mdc stitches into stitches two rows below, forming the layered effect that gives mosaic crochet its signature look.
Yarn & Colour Ideas
This design uses two colours to create contrast and definition.
For the sample, we used:
- White for the background
- An ombré yarn for the butterflies
This creates a soft gradient effect while still keeping the butterfly shapes crisp and defined.
You can easily customize this with:
- Neutrals for a modern look
- Soft pastels for baby gifts
- High contrast colours for a bold statement
Clean Finish with No Weaving Ends
One of the standout features of this pattern is the finishing.
- All yarn tails are enclosed inside a double border
- No weaving in ends
- Clean, polished edges
This makes a huge difference on a project at this scale.

Yarn Requirements
Worsted Weight #4 Shown in White (A)
100% Acrylic, 364 yds/ 198g
4 balls or 1370 yards
Red Heart Super Saver Ombre (CDN)
Worsted Weight #4 Shown in Violet(B)
100% acrylic, 482 yds/ 283g
4 balls or 1551 yds
Yarn Substitutes
When substituting yarn, choose a yarn with a similar weight and structure rather than matching yardage exactly. Worsted-weight acrylic yarns will work best. Adjust hook size as needed to achieve a balanced fabric.
- Brava Worsted or Brava Tweed (~218 yds/100 g, 100% acrylic) ≈ 2.18 yds per gram
- Premier Everyday Worsted (CDN site) (~180 yds/100 g, acrylic) ≈ 1.80 yds per gram
- Bag-O-Day Tonal Hues (CDN) (~590 yds/283 g, acrylic) ≈ 2.08 yds per gram
- Premier Basix (CDN site) (~359 yds/200 g, acrylic) ≈ 1.80 yds per gram

Gauge
This blanket is not a fitted project, so exact gauge is not critical. Small variations will not significantly affect the finished size. However, maintaining a balanced gauge will help the butterfly motifs appear crisp and keep the fabric lying flat.
Approximate Gauge
12.5 sts and 12 rows = 4″ with a 5.5 mm crochet hook

Overlay Mosaic Technique
- The chart is read from bottom to top.
- Every row is worked from right to left.
- Overlay mosaic crochet is worked on the right side of the fabric only. At the end of each row, cut the yarn and rejoin on the right side to begin the next row.
- Rows are worked in alternating colours, as indicated in the left column of the chart. The entire row is worked in the colour shown. Do not change colours within a row.
- Blank squares indicate a single crochet worked in the back loop only.
- Squares marked with an X indicate a mosaic double crochet (mdc) worked into the front loop of the stitch two rows below.
- Work the first and last stitch of every row through both loops.
Tip for Securing Yarn Tails
- To help secure the yarn tails when working overlay mosaic crochet, begin each row with a slip knot on the hook followed by a chain 1 before working the first stitch. At the end of each row, chain 1 and cut the yarn. This small chain helps lock the stitch and prevents the tail from loosening before the border is added.
- All yarn tails will be enclosed inside the double border, eliminating the need to weave in ends.
