Cute Beach Coverup Pattern

If you’re looking for the perfect crochet beach coverup pattern, the Caribbean Cocktail Coverup is a must-make for your summer wardrobe! I absolutely love bathing suit coverups — you can never have too many, and they’re always trendy for beach vacations, poolside lounging, wearing on hot summer days or tropical getaways. This crochet swimsuit coverup features a beautiful lace stitch pattern that’s light, breathable, and works up quickly. It’s made with comfy fingering weight yarn, giving it that soft, flowy drape that’s perfect for warm weather.

Best Yarn for a Crochet Coverup

Choosing the right yarn makes all the difference when making a crochet beach coverup. You want something lightweight, breathable, and soft against the skin, and that’s exactly why I chose Comfy Fingering Weight yarn for the Caribbean Cocktail Coverup.

Comfy Fingering Weight is a cotton/acrylic blend that offers the perfect balance of softness and durability. The cotton keeps it light and cool for warm-weather wear, while the acrylic adds just enough elasticity to give your coverup beautiful drape and movement. This yarn is ideal for beach days because it’s easy to care for, won’t feel too heavy in the heat, and holds up well even after washing.

If you’re looking for the best yarn for a crochet swimsuit coverup, I highly recommend giving Comfy Fingering Weight a try. It really makes the lace stitch pattern shine, and the final piece feels so soft and flowy — perfect for layering over your swimsuit or summer outfit!

Size Chart

Please note: This design is intended to be a very close fit and uses negative ease to achieve a snug, flattering silhouette. If you are on the smaller end of your size range—particularly in the bust—you may wish to switch to the smaller hook size for the bodice portion (double/single crochet stitches) to ensure a better fit. Be sure to choose your size based on your preferred Finished Bust/Hip Measurement.

Model is wearing size Medium with a 36″ bust, 39″ hip and is 5’6″ tall.

Yarn requirements are estimated and may vary slightly depending on brand and individual tension. It’s always wise to have a little extra yarn on hand just in case.

Gauge

Blocked: 11 sts and 7 rows (sc, dc pattern) equal to 2″ with 4mm hook

Lace Pattern Section: 19 sts and 10 rows equal to 3.5″ with 4mm hook

Solid Pattern Section: 10 sts and 6 rows equal to 1.75″ with 4 mm hook

I’ve included some yarn recommendations that would serve as excellent alternatives for this project!

Suitable Yarn Substitutes for Comfy Fingering Weight

Mandala String Yarn 350yds/100g

Farmhouse Cotton 360yds/100g

Hawthorne Fingering 357yds/100g

Stroll 231yds/50g

Sandscapes 328/100g

Before starting your project, it’s advisable to create a gauge swatch. This initial step ensures that your tension and stitch count align with the pattern’s specifications, which is crucial when the recommended yarn is unavailable or when substituting yarn. Maintaining the correct gauge is essential for achieving the desired fit.

If you decide to change the weight of yarn used for the pattern, note that this may alter the finished size of the garment. If you can meet the gauge while still achieving a fabric with nice drape and flow, you can use the yarn without needing modifications to the pattern. However, if you cannot meet the gauge because the yarn works up significantly larger, you’ll need to figure out the necessary modifications to the pattern yourself or opt for a smaller size.

Adjusting your crochet hook size can help you meet the pattern’s required gauge, and trying a different hook style or brand may also make a difference. Keep in mind that not all Fingering Weight #1 yarns are the same; variations in thickness, drape, and softness can affect your project.

For your gauge swatch, I recommend crocheting both the lace and solid sections of the pattern over 25 stitches. After completing the swatch, block it thoroughly and measure your stitches at the center. If you find that you have too many stitches, consider using a larger hook size. Conversely, if you have too few stitches, switch to a smaller hook size. You can also lengthen stitches by gently pulling on them or tighten your tension to shorten them.

Additionally, I have included some yarn recommendations that I believe would serve as excellent alternatives.

Construction

The coverup is constructed flat from the bottom up in two identical pieces, with gentle waist shaping created through slight decreases. Once each panel is complete, you’ll seam the straps and sides—leaving slits at the skirt for added flow. Finish with a unique edging around the armholes and neckline/back for a polished resort-ready look. An added i-cord tie threads through the lace at the waist to cinch and flatter your figure.
