With its tailored yet relaxed fit, the Men’s Cobblestone Cardigan offers ease of movement without feeling bulky. The button-up front creates a clean, classic look, and the length is designed for a traditional men’s cardigan — hitting at the hip for a flattering, wearable fit. Crocheted in Starlette Ragg worsted-weight yarn from Mary Maxim, this design showcases softness, warmth, and a beautiful marled texture that adds depth to every stitch. To make the process simple and enjoyable, a full step-by-step video tutorial is available on YouTube, guiding you through each stage of the project.

Quebec Trip

Our trip to Montreal was the perfect setting to showcase the Cobblestone Cardigan crochet pattern. We wanted a backdrop that felt European, and Old Montreal delivered with its charming cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and lively atmosphere filled with street music, delicious food, and unforgettable culture. Travelling by VIA Rail made the journey stress-free, giving us more time to enjoy the beautiful streets of both Montreal and Quebec City.

Aaron was such a great sport modelling a men’s crochet cardigan in the summer heat, so we could capture this timeless design in the old-world setting that inspired it.

If you’ve been searching for a crochet sweater pattern for men, or a gender-neutral design that works for every wardrobe, the Cobblestone Cardigan is the perfect project. Whether you’re strolling through historic streets or layering up at home, this cardigan will be your go-to cozy piece season after season.

Size Chart & Yarn Requirements

Please note: This design offers a classic fit in sizes M–5X, XS and S sizes are a loose fit with positive ease. When selecting your size, refer to your preferred finished chest measurement for the best fit. For reference, the model is wearing a size Large with a 44″ Chest.

It’s always a good idea to have extra yarn on hand to ensure you don’t run short—especially if you plan to modify the length or make other adjustments to the original design.

Before beginning your project, it’s highly recommended to create a gauge swatch. This crucial step ensures your tension and stitch count align with the pattern specifications—especially important if you’re substituting yarn or the recommended yarn is unavailable. Achieving the correct gauge is key to ensuring the finished garment fits as intended.

If you’re considering using a different yarn weight, be aware that it may impact the final size and drape of the cardigan. If you can match the pattern’s gauge while maintaining a nice drape and flow, you can proceed without modifying the pattern. However, if your yarn works up significantly larger or smaller and gauge cannot be matched, you’ll either need to adjust the pattern accordingly or choose a different size.

To help meet gauge, try adjusting your crochet hook size. You might also find that switching to a different hook style or brand can improve accuracy. Remember, not all worsted weight #4 yarns are created equal—thickness, drape, and softness can vary widely between brands.

For your swatch, work 20 stitches by 15 rows in half double crochet (hdc). Measure the center of the swatch, avoiding edges for the most accurate reading. If you have too many stitches, switch to a larger hook; if you have too few, try a smaller one. You can also adjust your tension slightly—lengthening stitches by pulling up more or shortening them by tightening your grip.

Construction

The Cobblestone Cardigan crochet pattern features a seamless top-down construction. You’ll begin by working in rows to shape the yoke, then separate the sleeves and body once the desired yoke depth is reached. The body is continued in rows and finished with a ribbed band. The sleeves are then rejoined and worked in the round, ending with ribbed cuffs. Finally, you have the option to add functional buttons for a classic, finished look.
