Substituting Yarn

Yarn substitution is a valuable skill for crocheters, especially when the original yarn listed in a pattern is unavailable.

To achieve the perfect fit for the recommended blanket scarf size, it’s crucial to maintain the same size. If necessary, adjusting your crochet hook size can help you achieve the correct measurements.

Selecting a yarn with a similar weight to the one specified in the pattern is recommended when substituting yarn. Starting with a yarn of similar weight will give you a solid foundation.

Also, creating a gauge swatch before starting your project is highly recommended. This will help ensure that your tension and stitch count align with the pattern’s specifications.

Pattern

Note: The scarf is worked in Rows. Alternate 2 rows of ldc, alternating colours (A-F) and 2 sc rows MC. Cut yarn at every colour change.

Row 1 (RS):

With A, ch 41, work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn—40 sts.

Row 2:

Ch 1 (doesn’t count as a stitch here and throughout), work 1 sc in each st across, turn—40 sts.

Row 3:

Ch 5 (counts as 1 ldc here and throughout), work 1 ldc in next 39 sts across, turn—40 sts.

Row 4:

Ch 5, work 1 ldc in next 38 sts across, 1 ldc in turning ch, change to MC, cut A, turn—40 sts.

Row 5:

With MC, ch 1, work 1 sc in each st across, last sc in turning ch, turn—40 sts.

Row 6:

Ch 1, work 1 sc in each st across, change to B, cut MC, turn—40 sts.

Rows 7-26:

Rep Rows 3-6 [5 times]. Rows 3-4 alternate colour B-F, Rows 5-6 MC.

Rows 27-122:

Rep Rows 3-26 [4 times].

Row 123:

With F, ch 1, work 1 sc in each st across, last sc in turning ch, turn—40 sts. Fasten off and weave in ends. Weave ends through like colours.

Fringe:

Cut 28 strands, each colour 20″ in length. Start in the first st; add six strands (1 each colour). Attach fringe by inserting crochet hook through scarf stitch, fold fringe in half and pull folded end through. Insert fringe ends through the loop and pull to tighten. Attach six pieces per stitch, alternating every third stitch. You should have 14 fringe tassels on each end of the scarf. Steam fringe if needed and trim ends.

Optional Twisted Fringe

To twist the fringe, separate the fringe in half (1 each colour). Flatten pieces and begin turning, keeping the strands of yarn flattened as you twist. Twist until you have approximately 2” of fringe left. Take one strand and knot it around the fringe ends. Trim ends when finished.
