If you’ve ever admired mosaic crochet but felt intimidated by the endless tails, complicated finishing, or wrong-side appearance, the Sailboat Mosaic Baby Blanket is about to change the way you think about crochet colourwork.

This unique blanket features a reversible inset mosaic crochet technique that creates a crisp sailboat design on both sides of the fabric while carrying the yarn up the edge of the work, eliminating the need to cut the yarn after every row. The result is a beautiful reversible crochet blanket with clean edges, minimal finishing, and no loose ends to weave in.
Designed by my daughter Emma for her new baby boy, this special blanket combines a timeless nautical theme with an innovative crochet technique that makes mosaic crochet more approachable and enjoyable.

Project Overview
The Sailboat Mosaic Baby Blanket features a striking, reversible mosaic inset with a crisp sailboat motif that looks beautiful on both sides. What Makes This Reversible Mosaic Crochet Blanket Unique?
Traditional mosaic crochet often creates a beautiful front but a less polished back. It also typically requires cutting the yarn after each row, leaving dozens of tails to weave in or a double border when the project is complete.
The Sailboat Mosaic Baby Blanket uses a reversible inset mosaic crochet method that allows the sailboat motif to appear beautifully on both sides of the blanket while carrying the yarn up the side of the work rather than cutting it after each row. This creates:
- A fully reversible crochet blanket
- No tails to weave in throughout the mosaic section
- Clean, professional-looking edges
- Beautiful colourwork visible on both sides
- A lightweight fabric with excellent drape
The technique uses specially designed mosaic stitches worked behind the fabric to create the reversible effect, resulting in a blanket that looks just as beautiful from the back as it does from the front.
The Story Behind the Design
When Emma was expecting her baby boy, she wanted to create a special sailboat blanket with a charming coastal feel. In true designer fashion, she texted me “sailboat blanket” in the middle of the night so she wouldn’t forget the idea! As our mosaic queen, she was already envisioning the chart and dreaming up a nautical design for her little boy.
She knew she wanted to use inset mosaic crochet to add the adorable wave border, but there was one problem. Using traditional inset mosaic crochet would create long chains across the back of the work, which can catch little fingers and toes.
Determined to find a better solution, Emma began experimenting. Her first attempt replaced the chains with single crochet stitches, but it created a flap across the wrong side of the blanket. Looking closer, she noticed something unexpected: the sailboat design appeared nearly identical on both sides.
That discovery led her to experiment with dropped stitches worked behind the fabric, combined with rows of single crochet, ultimately creating this unique reversible inset mosaic crochet technique.
The result is a beautiful sailboat blanket that looks stunning from both sides, with no long chains across the back and minimal finishing required.

Gauge
This pattern is not a fitted project, so exact gauge is not critical. Small variations in size will not affect the overall look or function of the blanket. Gauge is provided as a reference and may vary depending on yarn choice, hook style, and individual tension.
Approximate Gauge:

16 sts and 11 rows = 4″ in mosaic pattern with 5 mm hook
Note:
This blanket is worked using a reversible inset mosaic technique. Each row is worked individually, with stitches worked into rows below to create a layered, reversible fabric. As a result, you will physically work approximately 22 rows over a 4″ section, but these rows pair together visually. When measuring gauge, count 11 visible rows, not the total number of rows worked.
Each visible row represents two worked rows.
Rather than focusing on exact measurements, aim to create a fabric that feels soft, flexible, and comfortable in your hand. If your fabric feels too loose, try a smaller hook. If your stitches feel tight or stiff, use a larger hook.
Yarn Substitutions
This pattern was designed using Timeless Tones DK Weight #3 yarn
273 yds / 100 g = 2.73 yds per gram
When substituting yarn, look for a DK-weight yarn with a similar yards per gram ratio to achieve comparable results.
Suggested Substitutions
Mary Maxim Mellowspun DK (CDN): 284 yds / 100 g = 2.84 yds per gram
Knit Picks Brava Baby: 273 yds / 100 g = 2.73 yds per gram
Premier Basix DK (CDN): 306 yds / 100 g = 3.06 yds per gram
Lion Brand Color Theory: 246 yds / 100 g = 2.46 yds per gram

Do I need to block the blanket?
Wet blocking is highly recommended to even out edges and provide an excellent drape.
To wet block:
Wet the blanket in lukewarm water with a small amount of dish soap or woolwash. Allow soaking for around 25-30 min. Squeeze out as much water as possible. Wrap in a towel to press out the excess water. Lay the on blocking mats and pin it to the measurements. Allow to dry thoroughly, and remove pins.
Project Tips
- Follow the Pattern Repeats
Many rows include repeats marked with *. Work the stitches following the * and repeat them across the row as instructed to keep the mosaic design aligned.
- Check Stitch Placement
Mosaic stitches are worked two rows below, directly beneath the next stitch. Take a moment to locate the correct stitch before inserting your hook.
- Carry Yarn Up the Side
Carry the unused yarn up the side of the work rather than cutting it after each row, to reduce the number of ends to weave in. See the video for the demonstration.
- Keep Edges Straight
Work the first and last stitch of each row as a single crochet through both loops to maintain clean edges.
Reversible Mosaic Technique (No Tails)
The chart is read from right to left for each row. Row numbers along the side indicate the order in which the rows are worked. Each row is worked entirely in the colour stated in the written instructions. The colours shown in the chart are for visual reference only and you will not change colours within a row.
A blank circle indicates a single crochet (sc).
A box marked with B indicates a single crochet in the back loop only (sc blo).
A solid dot indicates a mosaic double crochet behind (mdb).
A circle outline indicates a mosaic double crochet behind in the back loop only (mdb-blo).
Wrong-side rows are worked as single crochet across unless otherwise indicated in the pattern.
Mosaic stitches are worked two rows below, directly beneath the next stitch. When working mdb or mdb-blo, insert the hook from behind the fabric, pull up a loop to the height of the current row, and complete the stitch. Working these stitches behind the fabric creates the reversible mosaic effect, allowing the design to appear on both sides of the blanket.
Rows are worked flat, turning at the end of each row. The yarn is carried up the side of the work rather than cut. Always work the first and last stitch of each row as a single crochet through both loops to keep the edges straight.

Frequently Asked Questions & Terms
Got a question? We’ve got answers!
What is reversible mosaic crochet?
Reversible mosaic crochet is a colourwork technique that creates a design that looks beautiful on both sides of the fabric. Unlike traditional mosaic crochet, where the back side often looks very different from the front, this technique uses specially placed stitches worked behind the fabric to create a clean, reversible effect.
Is this blanket really reversible?
Yes! The sailboat motif is visible on both sides of the blanket, making it fully reversible. This means there is no “wrong side” when displaying or using the blanket.
Does this mosaic crochet blanket have tails to weave in?
No. One of the unique features of this design is that the yarn is carried up the side of the work rather than cut after every row. This dramatically reduces finishing and eliminates the dozens of tails commonly associated with traditional mosaic crochet projects.
Is reversible inset mosaic crochet beginner-friendly?
This pattern is rated intermediate, but adventurous beginners may enjoy learning the technique with the included video tutorial. If you’re comfortable with mosaic crochet stitches and following a pattern, the step-by-step video will guide you through the process.

What is the difference between inset mosaic crochet and overlay mosaic crochet?
Inset mosaic crochet creates the design using colour changes and stitches worked into previous rows, while overlay mosaic crochet uses drop-down stitches worked over the surface of the fabric. This blanket uses a unique reversible inset mosaic technique that creates a beautiful design on both sides of the fabric.
Do I need to know how to read a mosaic crochet chart?
The pattern includes both written instructions and a detailed mosaic chart, so you can use whichever method you prefer. The included video tutorial also demonstrates how the chart works and how to follow the design.
Can I make the blanket larger?
Yes. The sailboat motif is worked in repeats of 30 stitches plus 3. Additional repeats can be added to increase the width while maintaining the design. The pattern also includes guidance for adjusting the blanket size.
