Why are Granny Squares so Popular?
Granny Squares have been a staple for many generations. They are a great way for beginners to learn how to crochet, as they only require basic stitches and can be worked up quickly.
Additionally, granny squares can be used in many different sizes, colours, and patterns, making them suitable for a variety of projects such as blankets, bags, clothing items, and home decor.
Granny squares can also make for an inexpensive crochet project since they can easily be made out of yarn scraps. Overall, the simplicity and flexibility of granny squares make them a favourite among crochet enthusiasts.

Are Granny Squares Beginner Friendly?
Granny squares have been a beloved crochet staple for generations. With the right mindset, anybody can achieve a granny square. For many people, a granny square is one of the first things you learn to crochet, given the circumstances.
To make a granny square, you will need to be familiar with the following; Magic circle, slip stitch, and double crochet. Once you have those down pat, you will easily be able to master the granny square.

What Stitches Are Best for Granny Squares?
To begin crocheting a granny square, you need to find the style you love. Personally, I love a puff stitch granny square or a classic double crochet granny square. The style I have chosen for this granny square cardigan is a simple double crochet square.
Keep in mind it is optimal to use the stitch the pattern is designed in, or it will not gauge correctly. By using a classic double crochet granny square, anybody will be able to crochet this cardigan no matter the skill level.

Time Saving Tip!
Use the thumb join to limit weaving 8 tails per square to only 2! If you have not yet learned the thumb join, you can watch my crochet Cardigan tutorialHERE.
While perfecting this technique may take a few tries, crocheters of all skill levels can easily learn it with a little practice.

What is the best yarn for a Granny Square Sweater?
Based on my expertise, lightweight cotton is the most suitable yarn for crocheting a granny square cardigan for summer. However, the ultimate decision is up to you. Consider where and when you will be wearing this cardigan.
Bring your favourite fibres into play. Your comfort and style matter most. My design of this cardigan was influenced by a summer aesthetic. By incorporating light hues, it will be ideal for pleasant and breezy summer conditions.
A light cotton material will guarantee the utmost comfort for me. Due to its breathable fibres and enduring nature, this cardigan will feel super cushy to the touch. For my crochet cardigan, I used Comfy Sport from WeCrochet.

Comfy Sport from WeCrochet
Comfy Sport yarn is a unique blend of Pima cotton and acrylic microfiber, offering a breathable, soft, and elastic yarn that is easy to wear and care for. With the added durability of Pima cotton, this yarn is perfect for long-lasting projects that you’ll love for years to come.

In the same way, work through each stitch of the granny square until you finish in the top ch-1 corner.
Start by working vertically through the diagram. I recommend beginning with the two longest sections of squares and then attaching the shorter sections. Afterward, proceed to seam horizontally.
Side and Sleeve Seaming:
Fold the cardigan together with the wrong side facing. Seam the sleeve together and the sides using the flat slip stitch joining technique. Repeat for the other side.

Simple Edging:
Ribbed Edging Option included in the PDF Digital Download for purchase.
Collar
Setup Row (RS):
With a slip knot on the hook, join the yarn to the bottom corner of the right front panel. Slip stitch in the blo of each st and ch across ending at the bottom left panel, turn.
Row 1 (WS):
With smaller hook, ch 1, 1 sc in the blo of each st across, turn.
Row 2:
Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, fasten off weave in ends.
Bottom Edge
Row 1:
With RS facing and larger hook, put a slip knot on the hook, and join it to the bottom left corner. Sl st in the blo of each st and ch across. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Finishing:
Lightly steam the cardigan to finish.
