Heavenly Herringbone Hat

I love crocheting new interesting stitches and playing with new textures in different designs. The Herringbone Single Crochet Stitch is an addicting and beautiful stitch that has quickly become one of my favourites. This crochet stitch works up surprisingly thick and cozy, making it the perfect stitch for a warm winter hat.

Swish Worsted Weight yarn from WeCrochet combined with herringbone single crochet stitch creates a soft, squishy, thick hat. For some of my Heavenly Herringbone hats, I added a strand of Aloft a lace weight mohair yarn for extra warmth and a fuzzy halo. The diagonal effect of the crochet stitches creates a modern and eye-catching pattern. The reverse side of this stitch is a bit tricky to get the hang of, so watch the tutorial on YouTube for detailed instructions on how to crochet the herringbone Single Crochet stitch.

Top Tips for the Herringbone Single Crochet stitch

  • The herringbone single crochet stitch will work up thick and dense. The starting chain should be crocheted fairly tight, not too tight that you can’t work into the back hump, but you don’t want it loose or the edge will look distorted.
  • It’s important to tug on the stitches and keep them loose, otherwise, it will be difficult to work through the bar of the stitch.
  • When working the reverse herringbone single crochet stitch make sure to keep the working yarn to the front of your work. Make sure to go from back to front under the stitch, keeping the stitch loose by tugging all three loops on the hook to the same height.

Heavenly Herringbone Hat Construction

The Heavenly Herringbone hat is worked from the side across then slip stitched to join. The band is then worked in rows and joined as you go to the base of the hat. The top of the crochet hat is decreased and then gathered to close the top of the hat. A Step by step video tutorial is provided on YouTube to walk you through these steps.

Row 1:

Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, sk first st at the body edge, sl st in next 2 sts (Body edge), turn—14 (16, 18, 18, 20) sts.

Rows 4-68 (74, 80, 84, 88): Repeat Rows 2-3, ending after completion of Row 2 repeat. To join the band, sl st the last row to row 1, working through the blo of each st across. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Option #2 – Simple band

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in the blo of each st around, sl st in the first sc to join—68 (74, 80, 84, 88) sts.

Rows 2 – 5 (5, 5, 6, 6): Rep row 1. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Hat Closure

Once you have completed the band with RS facing and larger hook join yarn to the top opening of the hat at the seam.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in every other row around the hat, 25 (27, 29, 30, 32) sts, sl st in the first sc to join—25 (27, 29, 30, 32) sts. Fasten off with a tail for weaving.

With yarn needle weave the yarn tail through every other st around. Pull hat tight. Continue to weave yarn around the hat making sure the opening is fully closed. Weave the yarn in opposite direction to secure. Trim the tail and weave in all ends.
