Made using Herrschners Cottage Cotton, a luxurious blend of cotton and acrylic, this pattern ensures a soft feel while maintaining the strength needed for carrying heavy items. By doubling the yarn, we’ve created a thick, sturdy fabric that won’t let you down. The unique mesh stitch pattern, constructed with linked double crochet, single crochet, and chains, not only adds visual interest but also enhances the bag’s durability and flexibility.

Our design features sturdy handles with a distinctive finished edge, allowing for a comfortable grip while you shop or explore. With this pattern, you won’t just create a bag; you’ll also embrace a sustainable lifestyle, reducing plastic use and promoting eco-friendliness.

We’ve included a comprehensive step-by-step tutorial on YouTube, guiding you through each part of the process. Whether you’re a seasoned crocheter or just beginning your crafting adventure, our detailed instructions will help you bring your Peek-A-Boo Mesh Bag to life in no time.

Easy Crochet Mesh Bag Pattern

Market Bags are one of my favourite practical crochet projects—I use them for everything! Whether it’s project bags, groceries, or carrying things to markets, they always come in handy and they are always in use. My daughters love to “borrow” them too (they’re very trendy these days, haha!).

The most important thing when making crochet bags is ensuring they’re sturdy. It’s not a big deal for carrying produce, but the moment you add something heavy, a flimsy bag can become awkward to use. I think I’ve finally found the perfect solution, doubling up Herrschners Cottage Cotton yarn! It creates an incredibly strong and durable bag that holds weight beautifully while still being soft and easy to work with.

I hope you enjoy making and using these bags as much as I do! And best of all, they work up super fast!

Happy bag making!

Gauge

Mesh: 13 sts and 8.5 rows equal to 4″ in pattern with 6.5mm hook (yarn doubled)

Strap: 6 sts and 6 rows equal to 2″ in sc with 6.5mm hook (yarn doubled)

Before starting your project, it’s advisable to create a gauge swatch. This initial step ensures that your tension and stitch count align with the pattern’s specifications, which is especially important if the original recommended yarn is unavailable or if you’re considering a yarn substitution. Maintaining the recommended gauge is essential for achieving the correct bag size. If size is not a concern, feel free to experiment with different yarns and hook sizes!

Adjusting your crochet hook size or switching to a different hook style or brand can help you reach the required gauge. It’s important to note that not all yarn weights are identical, even if they are labeled the same; variations in thickness, drape, and softness can occur.

I recommend crocheting a flat swatch in the mesh stitch pattern with 18 stitches, ensuring you end the repeat with a double crochet and a linked double crochet stitch. Measure your stitches at the center of the swatch, aiming for 13 stitches (with chains counted as stitches) and 8.5 rows to equal 4 inches for this specific pattern. If you find that you have too many stitches, consider switching to a larger hook size.

Conversely, if you have too few stitches, opt for a smaller hook size. Your technique can also affect the height of the stitches; you can lengthen stitches by pulling up on them or shorten them by tightening your tension.

I’ve included some yarn recommendations below that would serve as suitable alternatives.

Construction

The Peek-A-Boo Market Bag is worked from the bottom up, starting with the base crocheted in an oval shape with increases at each end. Once the base is complete, the height of the bag is crocheted using the mesh stitch pattern. Four straps are then evenly placed on the front and back of the bag, and finally, edging is worked around all the edges to finish the bag.

Pattern

For additional guidance, a step-by-step video tutorial is available on our YouTube channel to help you through each stage of the process. The entire pattern is worked by holding together two strands of worsted-weight yarn, and the mesh stitch pattern is based on a multiple of 4. To change the size of the bag, simply add or subtract multiples of 4 to the starting chain, noting that this size modification will also affect the stitches worked between increases.

BASE

Notes

  • The base is worked in a continuous round, so there’s no need to join at the end of each round.
  • Use four stitch markers to identify your increase points throughout the base.
  • To help keep track of your rounds, use a different coloured marker to mark the first stitch of each round.

Round 1:

Ch 35, work 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, pm in first and 3rd st, sc in next 32 chs, last ch work 3 sc, pm in first and 3rd st of increase, working on the opposite side of ch, sk first ch, sc in next 32 chs, sk last ch—70 sts.

Round 6:

*(1 sc blo in next 4 sts, 2 sc blo next st), 3 times, pm in first and last st of increase, sc blo each of next 32 sts; rep from * 1 more time—100 sts. The base should measure approximately 13″ x 4.25″.

Round 7:
