Substituting Yarn

Our Rustic Farmhouse Crochet Acorn pattern features Wool of the Andes in both worsted and bulky weight yarn, chosen for its rustic appeal and wide colour variety. The great news is that gauge is not critical for this pattern, allowing you plenty of flexibility when selecting substitute yarns.

You can easily use worsted-weight yarn and double or triple it for this pattern or opt for bulky or superbulky-weight yarn so that only a single strand is needed. Additionally, using a single strand of worsted-weight yarn is perfect for creating miniature acorns.

Have fun experimenting with different yarns to find the perfect look for your acorns! To help you get started, I’ve provided a few suitable yarn substitutions that you may enjoy. Happy crocheting!

To create the super bulky large acorn, follow the instructions for the small size; for the super bulky extra-large acorn, follow the instructions for the medium size. If there is only one number provided, it applies to all sizes. A step-by-step video tutorial is available on YouTube for the small size. To make super bulky weight yarn, use 3 strands of worsted weight yarn. A helpful trick for this is included in the video tutorial.

Finishing

Using a yarn needle, weave through the flo of each stitch around the opening. Pull the yarn to close the opening and weave in any loose tails. Finally, break off a small piece of cinnamon stick and glue it to the center top of the acorn to create a charming stem.

Experiment with various yarn weights to create a variety of acorns in different colours and sizes. Wool of the Andes will give your acorns a rustic farmhouse appearance, and it comes in a wide array of beautiful colours. Be sure to maintain a tight stitch throughout your project, ensuring the stuffing remains hidden for a polished finish. Enjoy the creative process, and have fun customizing your acorns!
