A crocheted Winter Forest blanket with green and white pine tree patterns is draped over a white sofa in a cozy, decorated living room.

To add even more visual depth, the blanket is worked in Red Heart Super Saver Ombre in Green Apple, which transitions seamlessly from light to deep green for a gorgeous ombré effect that mimics the natural shading of pine trees in winter. Whether you’re looking to add a cozy woodland vibe to your winter decor or want a statement piece for the holidays, this blanket is sure to impress.

Perfect for intermediate and seasoned crocheters alike, the pattern includes a detailed step-by-step mosaic crochet tutorial to guide you through the technique with confidence. And here’s the best part: no endless ends to weave in! The blanket is finished with a clever double border that hides all the tails, giving you a clean, polished finish with minimal fuss.

Emma’s First Crochet Pattern

I’m so excited to share this blanket with you because it marks a special milestone—it’s my oldest daughter Emma’s very first crochet pattern! In case you didn’t know, Emma works full-time with me behind the scenes. She’s a bit camera shy (we’re working on that! Lol), but you may have seen her joining me for more of our live sessions lately.

I couldn’t be prouder of her for designing this stunning blanket—she is my mosaic queen. Emma crochets all of my mosaic blankets and cardigans, and now that she’s designing too, I’m even more excited about what we’ll create together in the future!

Technique Tutorial

In this video tutorial, we’ll walk you through the basics of creating the Winter Forest Mosaic Crochet Blanket using the overlay mosaic crochet technique.

We’ll begin by reviewing the supplies you’ll need and then demonstrate how to get started with the correct foundation chain. To help you build confidence with the technique, we’ll work through the first few rows of the pattern as a swatch—perfect for practicing before diving into the full blanket.

Please note that this tutorial does not cover the entire pattern, but focuses on the foundational skills and stitch technique. We’ll also show you how to finish your blanket with a double border that hides all the yarn tails, giving your project a clean, professional finish.

Before starting your project, it’s best to create a gauge swatch to ensure that your tension and stitch count align with the pattern’s specifications. This step is especially important when substituting yarn, as not all yarns labeled the same weight behave identically—there can be differences in thickness, drape, and softness that affect the final size and feel of your blanket.

To check your gauge, I recommend crocheting a 6″ x 6″ swatch using Chart 1 worked over 20 stitches with a 6 mm crochet hook. This small section of the mosaic pattern will help you get familiar with the stitch technique while also ensuring you’re on track for sizing.

  • Measure your stitches at the center of the swatch, avoiding edge distortion.
  • If your stitch count is too high, try a larger hook size.
  • If your stitch count is too low, use a smaller hook.
  • You can also adjust row height by pulling up slightly on your loops (to lengthen) or tightening your tension (to shorten).

Remember, achieving the correct gauge is essential for ensuring your finished blanket matches the intended 48″ x 64″ dimensions.

I’ve included some yarn recommendations that serve as excellent alternatives to the original yarn used in the pattern. Always swatch when changing yarn to ensure a consistent result.

Special Stitches:

Mdc – Mosaic Double Crochet – A drop down dc is worked as a double crochet that is worked into the skipped st 3 rows below. It is indicated by an X on the chart. This stitch is worked on the RS of the garment. To prevent loose chains on the WS of work, you can anchor them by working the dc st around the chains. See the video for a demonstration.

Seamless Join: After the last stitch of the round, fasten off. With a yarn needle, skip the first stitch, weave under both loops of the next st, then weave through the blo of the last stitch. Weave in tail.

Overlay Mosaic Technique

The chart is read from right to left for each row, and rows are worked in alternating colours, as indicated in the column. Each entire row is worked in the colour specified; do not change colours within a row. The colours displayed within the boxes are for visual reference only and should be ignored when choosing which colour to work with.

  • A blank box represents a single crochet (sc) in the back loop only (blo).
  • A box marked with an “X” indicates a mosaic double crochet (mdc), which is worked into the front loop two rows below.
  • The first and last stitches of every row should be a single crochet through both loops to maintain clean edges.

When working overlay mosaic crochet in rows, always start on the right-hand side (RS) and work toward the left. At the end of each row, cut the yarn and rejoin the next colour at the beginning of the next row.
