Construction

The Children’s Granny Dress is crocheted in two pieces, beginning at the sleeves and working from one side across to the center. Each sleeve starts with a gradual increase pattern. Chains are added to the sides of each sleeve to accommodate the fronts and back of the pullover.

This side-to-side approach allows for a seamless transition between the sleeves and the body of the dress. After completing the front and back neck pieces, the two sections are seamed together at the front and back. To finish the look, a band is added to the bottom of the dress, providing a stylish touch.

The sweater option offers a ribbed band, helping to cinch the pullover at the waist and hips for a more tailored appearance.

Rows 2-5:

Repeat the remaining rows as indicated for side 1.

Seaming Directions:

With a smaller hook, begin by placing a slip knot on your hook.

To join your panels, lay each panel side by side, with the right side facing up. You will work by slip-stitching through the loops to the inside of the panels. Begin by slip-stitching through the back loop only (blo) of the first stitch on the right panel, then through the blo of the first stitch on the left panel.

As you join, keep your working yarn positioned at the back and centred between the two panels. Yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook to complete the slip stitch.

Continue slip-stitching in each stitch until you reach the neck opening, chain 1 and fasten off. Repeat this process for both the front and back panels, referring to the dotted lines on the diagram for guidance.

Block (optional)

Side Seams

The mattress stitch is used to seam the sides to hide the seaming yarn colour. The video tutorial provides a demonstration of how to do the mattress stitch.

To seam using the mattress stitch:

  • Place the two pieces you want to join side by side, with the right sides facing out.
  • Thread a tapestry needle with a matching yarn (2 times the length to seam).
  • Insert the needle through the side of the stitch on one side, pulling the yarn through.
  • Move to the other side and insert the needle through the side of the corresponding stitch.
  • Repeat this process, working back and forth between the two sides, ensuring the tension matches the surrounding stitches.
  • Continue seaming until the pieces are securely joined.
  • Once complete, weave in the ends securely to finish.

Neck Edge

The dress has no designated back or front, as both sides are identical. At this point, select which side will be considered the back of the dress for finishing touches.

Put a slip knot on the smaller hook. Join yarn to the back at the neck corner with a sl st.

Round 1:

Ch 1, work 2 YO sl st per row, work YO sl st, in each st and ch-1 sp around, sl st in first sl st to join. * You may also work sc sts around if you prefer.

Round 2:

Ch 1, work YO sl st in the blo of each st around, sl st in first sl st to join. Fasten off and weave in tails.

Bottom Band

With smaller hook, put a slip knot on the hook, RS facing join yarn to the bottom of the dress at the seam.

Sweater Ribbed Band

Setup Row (RS):

With smaller hook, ch 1, working across the side of the rows, work *2 sc in next row, 1 sc in next row; rep from * around, work 2 sc sts across the centre front and back seam, sl st in first sc to join—70 (82, 82, 94, 100, 100, 112, 118, 118) sts.

Join-As-You-Go Band

The band is joined as you go to the body edge.

Row 1:

Ch 9 (9, 9, 9, 9, 9, 11, 11, 11), 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, sk first st at the edge, sl st in next 2 sts (body edge), turn—8 (8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 10, 10, 10) sts.

Row 2:

Sk sl sts, 1 sc in blo of each st across, turn—8 (8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 10, 10, 10) sts.

Row 3:

Ch 1, work 1 sc in blo of each st across, sl st in next 2 sts (body edge), turn—8 (8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 10, 10, 10) sts.

Rows 4-70 (82, 82 94, 100, 100, 112, 118, 118):

Rep Rows 2-3, ending after completion of Row 2 repeat. To join the band, ch 1, sl st the last row to row 1, working through each st across. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Dress Slip Stitch Band

Row 1(RS):

With smaller hook, ch 1, working across the side of the rows, work 2 YO sl st in each row around, work 2 YO sl sts across the centre front and back seam, sl st in first sl st to join—92 (108, 108, 124, 132, 132, 148, 156, 156) sts.

*You may also work sc sts around if you prefer.

Rounds 2-5:

Ch 1, work YO sl st in the blo of each st around, sl st in first sl st to join. Fasten off and weave in tails. Crochet additional rounds if desired for a wider band.

Finishing

Lightly steam the dress to finish.

Washing Instructions

Handwashing is highly recommended to clean your dress or sweater. Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water and add a mild detergent suitable for delicate fabrics. Gently immerse the garment and agitate it softly to cleanse. Avoid excessive squeezing or wringing to prevent stretching or misshaping. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.

Drying:

After washing, gently remove excess water without wringing the garment. Lay it flat on a clean, absorbent towel, arranging it into shape. Roll up the towel and gently press to remove more moisture. Then, let the garment air dry, avoiding direct sunlight or heat sources that could cause fading or shrinking.
