What Kind of Yarn do you use to Crochet a Shawl?

When choosing yarn for crocheting a shawl, you have a wide range of options depending on the desired outcome of your project. Here are some commonly used types of yarn for shawls:

Lace weight yarn: This is a very fine yarn often used for delicate and intricate lace designs. It creates lightweight and airy shawls that are perfect for warmer weather or for adding a touch of elegance to an outfit.

Bamboo yarn: This yarn is known for its softness and drape, making it a popular choice for shawls. It has a subtle sheen and excellent breathability, making it suitable for both lightweight and warmer shawls.

Mohair yarn: Mohair is a luxurious yarn made from the hair of the Angora goat. It creates shawls with a fluffy and fuzzy texture, providing warmth and a beautiful halo effect. Mohair shawls can be lightweight or heavier, depending on the desired project.

Silk yarn: Silk is a luxurious and smooth fibre that creates shawls with an elegant shine and drape. It’s often blended with other fibres to enhance its qualities and is suitable for both lightweight and more substantial shawls.

Merino wool: Merino wool is a popular choice for shawls as it is soft, warm, and comes in various weights. It can create cozy and insulating shawls perfect for colder climates.

Yarn Requirments

I have used a bulky acrylic yarn for this particular shawl because of its beauty and affordability. The bulky weight of the yarn makes it a warm piece that will transition perfectly into the colder winter months. Acrylic yarn is safe and an easy care option for making shawls. It’s also a popular choice for making scarves.

Substituting Yarn

If you wish to substitute the yarn for the Shimmer Triangle Shawl, I have provided a list of suitable alternatives. When substituting yarn, it is important to consider the yarn weight, fibre content, and gauge to ensure that your finished project will have the desired size, texture, and drape.

Yarn substitution is an indispensable skill for crocheters, empowering you to achieve desired results in case the original yarn listed in a pattern is unavailable.

To achieve the pattern’s specified gauge for correct sizing, it is recommended to do a gauge swatch with your chosen yarn and adjust your hook size accordingly.

Due to the nature of this pattern, you can work more or fewer rows to get the desired size, allowing for flexibility when choosing a yarn substitution.

Video tutorial

To begin this project, you will need a Bulky or Chunky weight yarn that adds a shimmer and elegance to your shawl. We recommend using a category 5 (Bulky weight) yarn for this pattern and a 6.5mm crochet hook. The pattern is shown using Mary Maxim Marvelous Chunky shown in Sweet Stuff and Chocolate Mint.

We’ll start by demonstrating how to crochet the magic ring, which is essential for creating a seamless center for your shawl. If you’re not familiar with this technique, don’t worry! We’ll guide you through step by step, ensuring your success.

Next, we will teach you how to work the treble crochet stitch, which will be the main stitch used in this pattern. Once you become comfortable with this stitch, you’ll find it quick and easy to create the beautiful openwork design of the shawl.

We’ll carefully walk you through the first four rows of the pattern, showcasing the stitch placement and increases necessary to form the triangle shape. After these initial rows, the rest of the shawl is merely a repetition of Row 4. This repetition allows you to establish a rhythm and work up your shawl faster.

Once you reach your desired size, we will guide you on how to finish your shawl with a simple single crochet edge. This edging will provide a neat and polished look to the overall design.

We’ll show you how to cut and attach fringe to your shawl to add a touch of extra flair. This step adds a playful and trendy element, enhancing the overall beauty of your creation.

Blocking

To achieve the perfect shape and size for your Shimmer Triangle Shawl, it is essential to block it properly. Follow these blocking instructions to ensure a beautiful finished result:

  • Start by dampening your shawl. You can do this by misting it lightly or soaking it in a basin of water and gently squeezing out the excess moisture.
  • Carefully place your damp shawl on blocking mats, arranging it in the desired shape and size. Stretch it gently to smooth out any wrinkles or creases. Pay special attention to the triangle shape, ensuring that all edges are straight and even.
  • Use rustproof T-pins or blocking wires to secure the edges of the shawl, pinning it at regular intervals along the edges. Make sure to pin through both the shawl and the mat underneath to keep it in place.
  • Once you have pinned the shawl to your satisfaction, allow it to fully dry. This process may take several hours or even overnight. Avoid disturbing the pins while the shawl is drying.
  • Once your shawl is completely dry, carefully remove the pins, starting from one corner and working your way around. Take your time to avoid snagging the yarn or misshaping the shawl.

Fringe:

To add a beautiful fringe detail to your Shimmer Triangle Shawl, follow these easy steps:

Begin by cutting approximately 202 strands of yarn, each measuring 15 inches in length. Note: The fringe will consist of 2 strands of yarn.

Use your crochet hook to attach the fringe to the shawl. Insert the hook through the shawl at the desired location.

Fold a pair of yarn strands in half, creating a loop at one end.

Insert the folded end of the fringe through the hole formed by the crochet hook.

Once the folded end is through, insert the loose ends of the fringe through the loop created by the folded end.

Gently pull on the loose ends to tighten the loop and secure the fringe to the shawl.

Repeat this fringe attachment process, attaching the fringe to every other stitch along the finished edge of the shawl. Adjust the spacing of the fringe as desired.

If desired, steam the fringe using a handheld steamer or by carefully hovering a steam iron over it. This will help the fringe lay flat and smooth.

Finally, trim the ends of the fringe to your desired length. You can create a straight edge or opt for a more bohemian look by cutting the ends at different lengths.

With these simple steps, you’ll have a gorgeous fringe accent on your Shimmer Triangle Shawl, adding an extra touch of charm and sophistication to your accessory. Enjoy!
