The Perfect Yarn for a Crochet Dishcloth

When it comes to dishcloths, cotton is definitely the way to go. I’ve absolutely fallen in love with Cottage Cotton Yarn from Herrschners, hence the name Cozy Cottage Dishcloth! It’s soft yet durable, which is exactly what you want for a hardworking kitchen helper.

What really sold me is their gorgeous colour palette. The soft, pastel tones are totally my vibe, and I know you’ll love them too! This yarn has quickly become a go-to for me, you’ll definitely be seeing more patterns made with it. I even used it for my new Peek-A-Boo Market Bags, and they turned out phenomenal!

Gauge

Hdc/Sl St: 16 sts and 17.5 rows equal to 4″ in pattern with 5mm hook

Three crochet dishcloths in blue, white, and light purple are neatly stacked on a light surface beside some green leafy stems.

Before starting your project, it’s advisable to create a gauge swatch. This important first step ensures that your tension and stitch count align with the pattern’s specifications, especially if the originally recommended yarn is unavailable or if you’re considering a yarn substitution. Maintaining the recommended gauge is crucial for achieving the correct size. However, if size is not a concern, feel free to experiment with different yarns and hook sizes!

To reach the required gauge, you might need to adjust your crochet hook size or switch to a different hook style or brand. Remember, not all yarn weights are identical, even if labeled the same; variations in thickness, drape, and softness can occur.

I recommend crocheting a flat swatch with approximately 24 stitches. Measure your stitches at the center of the swatch, aiming for 16 stitches and 17.5 rows to equal 4 inches. Alternatively, you can begin making the dishcloth and check that it’s about 10 inches wide. If you find that you have too many stitches, consider using a larger hook size. Conversely, if you have too few stitches, opt for a smaller hook size.

Your technique can also influence the height of your stitches; you can lengthen stitches by gently pulling up on them or shorten them by tightening your tension. Feel free to adjust stitches in multiples of 2 and crochet as many rows as needed to create a square dishcloth.

I’ve included some yarn recommendations below that would serve as suitable alternatives.

Bunny Folding Directions

Cut four strands of twine, each measuring 26 inches, and set them aside.

Place the dishcloth with the wrong side facing up and the corners pointing towards the top and bottom.

Starting from the bottom corner, roll the dishcloth tightly up to the top corner.

Once rolled, fold the rolled dishcloth in half at the center.

Using all four strands of twine, tie a bow around the folded dishcloth at the center point to secure it in place.

A cream-colored woven basket holds several folded crochet dishcloths in shades of blue, lavender, and purple, placed on a wooden surface.
