Crochet Bulky Mosaic Beanie

If you’re new to colorwork crochet this crochet bulky mosaic beanie is the perfect crochet hat to try. The hat is worked from the bottom up. The band is worked in rows then joined. The mosaic crochet pattern is worked around the band in rounds. The top of the hat is decreased and gathered to close the top of the hat. A step-by-step video tutorial is provided on YouTube.

The Yarn

Four skeins of yarn and a crochet hook on a white surface, perfect for creating a Bulky Mosaic Beanie.

The yarn used to make the Crochet Bulky Mosaic Beanie pattern is Chroma Twist Bulky Weight yarn from WeCrochet. Chroma Twist Bulky is a blend of 70% Superwash Wool and 30% Nylon. It’s a bulky #5 weight and is on the light side. Chroma Twist comes in 23 beautiful and bright shades. The colours I used for my hats are Dear Diary, Surf’s Up, Narwhal and Bare. One each of colour A & B is needed for all sizes.

Substitutes

If you’re looking for a yarn substitute I’ve listed a few that I think will work well. Make sure to meet the pattern gauge of 13 sts and 13 rows equal to 4″ in the Mosaic Pattern when crocheting this hat so that the sizing will be correct.

The Hook

I love crocheting with my Streamline Hooks from Furls. They are light and easy to work with. I especially love the large hooks. They are so nice to work with and I can crochet for hours without hand pain. I used the Taurus 6mm crochet hook for the bulky mosaic beanie. Use code MJS15 for 15% off.

To make big beautiful yarn pompoms I highly suggest a Jumbo Clover, Pompom Maker. You can make a pompom so quick and easily with hardly any trimming. Or if you prefer you can purchase snap style faux fur pom poms like the ones I used for my hats HERE

Special Stitches

Special Stitches: Drop-down Dc – Drop-Down Double Crochet – Work a double crochet in the front loop of stitch 2 rows below.

Overlay Mosaic Crochet

How to read an Overlay Mosaic Crochet Chart: The chart is read from right to left for each round. Rounds are worked in alternating colours, as indicated on the left column. The entire round is worked in the colour stated. Ignore the colours displayed in each box; this shows how the pattern will look; you will not change colour throughout a round. A blank box indicates you will work a sc in the blo. A box marked with an X indicates working drop-down double crochet. When working overlay mosaic crochet in the round, don’t cut colours. Drop off the colour at the end of the round and pick up new colour as you go. Colour is changed at the sl st join. Always tighten yarn tails when joining at the end of each round; this will keep the join invisible.

Pom Pom:

Make a yarn pom pom or attach a faux fur pom pom. Sew snap to the top of the hat. Blow-dry pom to fluff and snap to the top of the hat. Add a garment tag for a personalized touch. Leather Rivets are available HERE.
