Substituting Yarn

Starlette worsted-weight yarn offers a luxurious and soft quality in a diverse selection of colours, making it a perfect choice for complementing your home decor.

When substituting yarn, it’s crucial to choose a yarn with a weight similar to the one specified in the pattern to achieve the intended sizing. Starlette yarn leans towards the heavier and plush side of the worsted weight range. Opting for a slightly lighter worsted-weight yarn may result in a slightly smaller pumpkin, bringing a unique touch to your project. If precise sizing is not a primary concern for you, the variation in size should be fine.

For those who prefer to maintain the exact dimensions of the pumpkins, it is recommended to check your gauge by working up the smallest pumpkin. This preliminary step allows you to check if your tension and stitch count align with the pattern’s specifications, ensuring that your finished crochet pumpkin matches the intended size accurately. I’ve included suitable substitutes, with Premier being an exact match in two different ball sizes with similar colour options.

Pattern

Small (Medium, Large)

Notes:

The pattern is written for the smallest size, with the larger sizes in parentheses ( ). If there is only 1 number, it applies to all sizes—a step-by-step video tutorial is provided on YouTube for the medium size. The small pumpkin begins with 12 stitches, which is the same starting point as the large size. Increase only to round 2; the other 2 sizes will increase to round 3.

Change the yarn colour on the final slip stitch of the round. Or you can fasten off yarn at last sl st and join new colour in space between clusters. Cut tails and triple knot to secure. Trim ends. Increase rounds are worked in colour A. Alternate colours A-E throughout the cluster and decrease rounds.

Increase Rounds

Round 1:

With colour A, Magic Ring, ch 2 (not included as a st), work 12 (10, 12) dc in the ring, pull ring tight, sl st in first dc to join—12 (10, 12) sts.

Round 2:

Ch 2, work 2 dc in each st around, sl st in first dc to join—24 (20, 24) sts. Small size, sl st in sp between the ch-2 and first dc to join, change to colour B, cut A, knot and trim tails, then proceed to cluster rounds.

Round 3:

Ch 2, work 1 dc in first st, work 2 dc in next st, * 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; rep from * around, sl st in sp between the ch-2 and first dc to join—x (30, 36) sts.

Cluster Rounds

Notes: Work clusters between double crochet (dc) stitches and work between the clusters for subsequent rounds.

Round 1:

(Ch 3, 1 dc) in first sp between ch-2 and first dc, *sk 2 sts, (2 dc) in next sp between dc; rep from * around. sk last 2 sts, sl st across 2 dc to sp between clusters—24 (30, 36) sts. Change to colour B, cut A, knot and trim tails,

Round 2 (Inc):

(Beg cluster) in first sp between 2 dc, (cluster) in each sp between 2 dc around, sl st across beg cluster to sp between clusters—12 (15, 18) clusters. Change to colour C, cut B, knot and trim tails,

Rounds 3 – 6 (7, 9):

Rep Round 2—12 (15, 18) 3 dc clusters. Alternate colours each round throughout the rest of the pattern, knot, and trim tails as you go.

Round 7 (8, 10)(Dec):

(Ch 3, 1 dc) in first sp between clusters, (2 dc) in each sp between clusters around, sl st across 2 dc to sp between clusters—24 (30, 36) sts. Small size, sl st in ch-3, then proceed to Fill the pumpkin.

Round – (9, 11):

(Ch 3, 1 dc) in first sp between 2 dc, (2 dc) in each sp between 2 dc around, sl st in ch-3 to join—x (30, 36) sts.

Filling the Crochet Pumpkin

Add rice to the bag according to the size you are working on. Weigh the bag with the rice so that it reaches approximately 300g (515g, 950g). Once you have the desired weight, tie the rice bag closed and insert it into the pumpkin shell. Mold the pumpkin into shape by pressing the top of the bag down into the center of the pumpkin. Adjust the amount of rice as needed to achieve your preferred pumpkin shape.

Decrease

Final Round:

Ch 2, dc2tog across first 2 sts, *dc2tog across next 2 sts; rep from * around, sl st in first dc to join. Fasten off with a long tail.

Finishing

Using a yarn needle, weave through the front loop (flo) of each stitch around the opening. Place a cinnamon stick in the center and pull the yarn to tighten the opening, leaving a hole large enough for the stick.

Use a glue gun to apply glue to the bottom and sides of the

cinnamon stick, then press it into the center hole. This will secure the stick and create an indent at the top of the pumpkin. Finally, cut a piece of twine and tie it around the cinnamon stick to finish.

Create pumpkins in various sizes, use different colours, or make solid-coloured pumpkins for a festive display.
