Notes:
9 point star blanket is worked in the round in double crochet stitches, with a 5.5mm hook. When changing colours, work the last yarn over the last stitch with the next colour. Owl pieces are made separately with a 4mm hook and seamed to the blanket.
Blanket:
Use 5.5mm hook
Round 1:
With A and 5.5mm hook, Magic Ring, ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout), work 8 dc in ring, pull ring tight, sl st in 3rd ch of ch 3 to join—9 sts.
Round 2:
Ch 3, work 1 dc in first st, work 2 dc in each st around, sl st in 3rd ch of ch 3 to join—18 sts.
Round 3:
Ch 3, work (1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in first st, sk next st, *work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st, sk next st; rep from * around, sl st in 3rd ch of ch 3 to join—36 sts.
Round 4:
Ch 3, *work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, work 1 dc in next st, sk 2 sts, work 1 dc in next st; rep from * around [7 more times], work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, work 1 dc in next st, sk last st, change to B on last dc, sl st in 3rd ch of ch 3 to join—54 sts.
Round 5:
Ch 3, work 1 dc in next st, *work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, work 1 dc in next 2 sts, sk 2 sts, work 1 dc in next 2 sts; rep from * around [7 more times], work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, work 1 dc in next 2 sts, sk last st, sl st in 3rd ch of ch 3 to join—72 sts.
Round 6:
Ch 3, work 1 dc in next 2 sts, *work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, work 1 dc in next 3 sts, sk 2 sts, work 1 dc in next 3 sts; rep from * around [7 more times], work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, work 1 dc in next 3 sts, sk last st, sl st in 3rd ch of ch 3 to join—90 sts.
Continue increasing the 9 point star in this manner. Colour Pattern as follows

Use 4mm hook. Use pins to hold pieces in place for sewing.

Head:
Use a stitch marker to mark the first st of every round, move marker up as you go.
Round 1:
With MC and 4mm hook, Magic Circle, ch 1, work 10 sc in ring, pull ring tight (don’t join)—10 sts.
Round 2:
Work 2 sc in each st around—20 sts.
Round 3:
*Work 1 sc in first st, work 2 sc in next st; rep from * around—30 sts.
Round 4:
*Work 1 sc in first 2 sts, work 2 sc in next st; rep from * around—40 sts.
Rounds 5-12:
Work 1 sc in each st around—40 sts.
Round 13:
*Work 1 sc in first 2 sts, work 1 sc2tog next 2 sts; rep from * around—30 sts.
Round 14:
Work 1 sc in each st around—30 sts.
Round 15:
*Work 1 sc in first st, work 1 sc2tog next 2 sts; rep from * around—20 sts.
Round 16:
Work 1 sc in each st around—20 sts.
Stuff head with polyester fibrefill.
Round 17:
*Work 1 sc2tog next 2 sts; rep from * around—10 sts. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. With yarn needle weave through the front loop only of each st around, pull tight. Weave ends.
Beak:
Round 1:
With I and 4mm hook, ch 6, work 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, work 1 hdc in next ch, work 1 dc in each of next 2 chs, work 1 tr in last ch. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Eyes: Make 2
Round 1:
With G and 4mm hook, Magic Ring, ch 1, work 8 sc in ring, pull ring tight, sl st in first sc to join—8 sts.
Round 2:
Ch 1, work 2 sc in each st around, sl st in first sc to join—16 sts.
Round 3:
Ch 1, *work 1 sc in first st, work 2 sc in next st; rep from * around, sl st in first sc to join—24 sts. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.
Embroider sleepy eye with H. Weave 4 sections to Round 2. Weave 5 eyelashes across Round 3 of eye. Knot ends to WS of work and trim.
Sewing:
The starting rounds of head are the front. Pin eyes and beak on the front of head and sew in place.
Ears: Make 2
Round 1:
With MC and 4mm hook, Magic Ring, ch 1, work 6 sc in ring, pull ring tight, sl st in first sc to join—6 sts.
Round 2:
Ch 1, work 1 sc in first st, 1 sc in next st, work 2 sc in next st, work 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, work 2 sc in last st, sl st in first sc to join—8 sts.
Rounds 3-4: Ch 1, work 1 sc in first st and in each st around, sl st in first sc to join—8 sts. Round 5: Ch 1, work 1 sc in first st and in each of next 2 sts, work 2 sc in next st, work 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, work 2 sc in last st, sl st in first sc to join—10 sts.
Fasten off leaving a tail for sewing.
Ear Tassels: Make 2
Tassel is made up of 6 strands: 1 each of A-F. Cut strands 8″ long. Attach tassel by inserting crochet hook through the top of the ear, fold fringe in half and pull folded end through. Insert fringe ends through the loop and pull to tighten. Trim ends. Pin ears in place and sew to the top of the head.
Sewing:
Sew head to the first round of blanket.
Wings: Make 2
Row 1 (Base):
With A and 4mm hook, ch 4, work 1 dc in 4th ch from hook— 1 dc, ch 3 (2 posts made)
Row 2 (Feather):
Ch 3, working down the dc post, work 4 dc, ch 1, rotate work so that you can work up ch 3 post, work 4 dc, ch 3, sl st to centre of feather— 1 feather made.
Row 3:
Ch 3, work 1 dc in same sp— 2 posts made.
Row 4 (Feather):
Ch 3, working down the dc post, work 4 dc, ch 1, rotate work so that you can work up ch 3 post, work 4 dc, ch 3, sl st to centre of feather— 1 feather made.
Row 5:
Ch 3, work 1 dc in same sp— 2 posts made.
Row 6 (Feather):
Ch 3, working down the dc post, work 4 dc, ch 1, rotate work so that you can work up ch 3 post, work 5 dc— 1 feather made.
Row 7 (Incr):
Ch 3, work 1 dc in same sp, ch 2, work 2 dc in centre of feather, ch 2, work 2 dc in ch-3 sp—3 (2 dc clusters) made.
Row 8 (Feather):
Ch 3, working down the dc post, work 4 dc, ch 1, rotate work so that you can work up the other dc post, work 5 dc up dc, ch 1 and sk next 2 dc cluster, work 5 dc down the first dc of next cluster, ch 1 and rotate, work 5 dc up next dc of same cluster— 2 feathers made.
Row 9 (Incr):
Ch 3, work 1 dc in same sp, ch 2, work 2 dc in centre of feather, ch 2, work 2 dc in-between feathers (going over ch-1 and in between 2 dc cluster (Row 8), ch 2, work 2 dc in centre of feather, ch 2, work 2 dc in ch-3 sp—5 (2 dc clusters) made.
Row 10 (Feather):
Ch 3, working down the dc post, work 4 dc, ch 1, rotate work so that you can work up the other dc post, work 5 dc up that dc, *ch 1 and sk next 2 dc cluster, work 5 dc down the first dc of next cluster, ch 1 and rotate, work 5 dc up next dc of same cluster; rep from * across—3 feathers made. Fasten off leaving a tail for sewing.
Sewing:
Feathers WS facing use a yarn needle to sew 3 feather ends together. Weave the needle through the corner, centre of feathers and between feathers across. Pull to tighten and bunch feathers together (see video). Knot tail ends together to secure. Wrap wings around the first 4 rounds of the blanket. Sew in place. Sew the first feather together.
Tassels: Make 9
Tassel is made up of 6 strands: 1 each of A-F. Cut strands 8″ long. Attach tassel by inserting crochet hook through the top of ear corner ch-2 sp of the blanket, fold fringe in half and pull folded end through. Insert fringe ends through the loop and pull to tighten. Trim ends. Steam ends if needed.
