Crochet Top Construction

The Crochet Cabot Trail Cardigan is worked in one piece flat starting at the back band and finishing with the front panels. The sleeve cuffs and collar ribbing are then added. The smaller hook is used for the ribbing and a larger hook for the lace stitch. The pattern is written for the smallest size with larger sizes in parentheses ( ). Crochet a Cardigan Notes

The cardigan is worked in one piece Flat from the bottom up, starting at the back. The bands and edging are worked with a 4mm hook and the body with a 4.5mm hook. A chain is worked out from each side of the body for the sleeves. The sleeves and body are worked as one piece. The neck opening is marked, next half of the sleeve is worked with each front panel. Fasten off once the sleeve is at the correct width. The front body is marked, then worked, finishing with the band. Block and seam to finish. The pattern is written for the smallest size with larger sizes in parentheses ( ). A step-by-step video tutorial is provided on our YouTube channel for size small/medium.

Worked in multiples of 6 plus 1- refer to the chart and video. Proceed to the back to begin the pattern.

Sleeves:

Notes: The pattern is written for sleeve 15″ in length. To adjust the sleeve length reduce or increase the chain by 6 sts (approx 1.5″).

Back Left Sleeve:

With RS facing and separate ball of yarn, join to top left side of work with a sl st, ch 60 and fasten off (this sets up the left sleeve for lace stitch pattern).

Back Right Sleeve:

Join back onto the working yarn loop top right. Chain 65 and proceed to Row 1.

Row 1 (RS):

Mark Neck Opening:

With RS facing, from outside sleeve count over 16 (17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22) clusters, pm in the cluster. Rep for the left and right sides. Work is separated at this point. Work Front Right side then work Front Left. The neck opening should measure approximately 4″ and should be 3 cluster sts.

Front Right Sleeve:

Row 1 (RS): With working yarn, ch 5, work 1 sc in 3rd ch of ch-3, ch 1, sk cluster, work 1 sc first ch of ch-3, * ch 5, sk next sc, work 1 sc in 3rd ch of ch-3, ch 1, sk cluster, work 1 sc in the first ch of ch-3; rep from * across, end with ch 2, work 1 dc in last sc, before marker (leave remaining sts unworked), turn—15 (16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21) ch-1 sps.

The band is joined as you go to the panel edge.

Setup Base Row: Ch 1, work 1 sc in first st, work 2 sc in ch-3 sp, work 1 sc in the cluster, work 2 sc in ch-3 sp, *work 1 sc in sc, work 2 sc in ch-3 sp, work 1 sc in the cluster, work 2 sc in ch-3 sp; rep from * across, end with 1 sc in last st, turn—31 (37, 43, 49, 55, 61, 67) sts.

Row 1:

With smaller hook, ch 11, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, sk first st at the panel edge, sl st in next 2 sts (base row), turn—10 sts.

Row 2:

Sk sl sts, 1 sc in the blo of each st across, turn—10 sts.

Row 3:

Ch 1, work 1 sc in the blo of each st across, sl st in next 2 sts (base row), turn—10 sts.

Rows 4- 30 (36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66): Rep Row 2 & 3, ending on row 2. The last Row fasten off and weave in tails.

Front Left Sleeve:

Work the same as Right Front Band.

Sleeve Cuff:

Repeat for left and right sleeves.

Sleeve Edge: With RS facing and the larger hook join yarn to the edge of sleeve, ch 1, work 1 sc per row across, turn 28 (32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52) sts. Change to the smaller hook.

Band

The band is joined as you go to the sleeve edge.

Row 1:

With smaller hook, ch 11, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, sk first st at the sleeve edge, sl st in next 2 sts (sleeve edge), turn—10 sts.

Row 2:

Sk sl sts, 1 sc in the blo of each st across, turn—10 sts.

Row 3:

Ch 1, work 1 sc in the blo of each st across, sl st in next 2 sts (sleeve edge), turn—10 sts.

Rows 4- 28 (32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52): Rep Row 2 & 3 ending on Row 2. After the last row fasten off with a long tail for seaming.

Edging:

Row 1: With the smaller hook join yarn to front right panel edge with a sl st, ch 1, work 1 sc evenly across the band and front right panel, (approx 2 sts per row), sc across the neck opening (2 sc in ch-3 sp, 1 sc in each st), sc evenly across the front left panel and band. Make sure to have the same number of sts on each side.

Rows 2-5: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each st across, turn. The last row fasten off and weave in tails.

Blocking:

Wet the entire garment in lukewarm water with a small amount of dish soap or woolwash. Allow soaking for around 25-30 min. Squeeze out as much water as possible. Wrap the garment in a towel to press out the excess water. Lay the garment out on blocking mats and pin it to the schematic measurements. Allow the garment to dry thoroughly.

Seaming:

Repeat for the Left and Right Sides.

Fold garment RS facing lining up sides and sleeves (make sure the lace pattern is lined up). With yarn needle and yarn, whip stitch sleeve and sides together. Weave in ends.
