If you love cozy crochet garments that feel like wrapping yourself in a warm hug, the Halo Hugs Cardigan is one of my favourite designs yet.

Intermediate skill level.
Woman with long brown hair wearing a purple and white Halo Hugs knit sweater and light blue jeans stands indoors, looking down with one hand touching her hair.

This top-down crochet cardigan pattern was designed to be soft, oversized, and incredibly comfortable for everyday wear. I wanted something that worked up quickly while still creating a lightweight fabric with beautiful drape.

The cardigan is crocheted seamlessly from the top down, making it easy to customize the fit and length as you go.

One of the things that makes this design extra special is the colour-phasing yarn, which creates a gorgeous gradient effect without changing colours.

Project Overview

The Halo Hugs Cardigan is a cozy, oversized crochet layer designed for everyday wear. This intermediate-level cardigan is worked seamlessly from the top down using extended single crochet for a soft, lightly textured fabric. The yoke is worked flat in rows to shape the V-neckline and front opening, with the body worked in rows to the desired length. Sleeves are joined to the arm openings and worked in turned rounds, finishing with gently cinched cuffs and a clean button band.

Halo Hugs Cardigan Pattern Overview

The Halo Hugs Cardigan is an intermediate-level crochet garment designed for cozy layering and modern style.

This top-down crochet cardigan pattern begins at the neckline and works downward in rows to form the yoke. The body continues in rows to create the open-front cardigan, and the sleeves are added afterward and worked on in turned rounds.

Construction Summary

  • Yoke worked flat in rows
  • Body worked flat for cardigan opening
  • Sleeves worked in turned rounds
  • A ribbed band was added along the front
  • Buttonholes added in finishing rows

Because the cardigan is worked from the top down, you can easily try it on while crocheting and adjust the fit if needed.

Yarn Substitutes

When substituting the recommended yarn, choose one that meets the pattern gauge and has a similar yardage-to-weight ratio. Caron Colorama Halo Perfect Phasing has a yardage-to-gram ratio of approximately 2.1 yards per gram. Yarns with a lower ratio may produce a denser fabric and require hook size adjustment. Always check your gauge. Caron Colorama 481 yds ÷ 227 g = 2.12 yds per gram. Learn how to substitute yarn

Note:

Yarns without a halo will produce more stitch definition and a firmer fabric, while brushed or fuzzy yarns will create a softer, more relaxed drape. Colour changes and gradient length will vary by brand and may differ from the sample shown.

Pattern Support is only available in our Facebook Community group and Video Tutorials.
No additional support is provided for modified patterns, alternate yarns, or changes to gauge.

Can you adjust the length of a crochet cardigan?

Yes! One of the biggest advantages of a top-down crochet cardigan pattern is how easy it is to customize.
You can adjust:
• body length
• sleeve length
• ribbing width
• button spacing
Simply continue working additional rows in the body until you reach your desired length.

Is a top-down crochet cardigan good for beginners?

A top-down crochet cardigan pattern can absolutely work for adventurous beginners, especially if you are comfortable with basic crochet stitches.
This pattern is labelled intermediate, mainly because it includes:
• shaping through the yoke
• working in rows and rounds
• sleeve separation
• ribbed band construction
However, the stitches themselves are simple and repetitive, making it a great project for crocheters who want to move into garment making.
