An Easy Crochet Dishcloth for Beginners
If you are new to crochet or just looking for a relaxing project you can finish quickly, this is a great pattern to have on hand.
The main dishcloth is worked flat in rows using only single crochet and double crochet. Once you have completed the first couple of rows, you simply repeat the same stitch pattern until your dishcloth is square.
The combination of single and double crochet creates plenty of texture, making the finished fabric practical for washing dishes and wiping countertops while still looking beautiful in your kitchen.
The dishcloth is finished with a simple single-crochet border, followed by a picot edging for a delicate decorative finish.
How Long Does It Take to Crochet a Dishcloth?
This is a fantastic quick crochet project. One dishcloth takes approximately 25 to 30 minutes to crochet, depending on your speed and experience.
That makes these dishcloths perfect when you need a last-minute handmade gift or want to make several for a craft market.
You can also crochet a stack in coordinating colours and package them together as a beautiful handmade kitchen set.
Best Yarn for Crochet Dishcloths
For this pattern, I used Premier Home Cotton (CDN), a worsted-weight #4 cotton blend yarn.
The pattern uses approximately 92 yards per dishcloth, so you don’t need much yarn for each one. The samples are shown in Fruity Speckle, Robin’s Egg Speckle, White, Passionfruit, and Denim.
Cotton and cotton-blend yarns are especially well-suited for crocheting dishcloths because they produce a durable fabric with excellent stitch definition.
You can substitute another medium-weight cotton or cotton blend yarn if you prefer. Because this isn’t a fitted project, exact gauge isn’t critical. Your finished dishcloth may simply be slightly larger or smaller depending on your yarn, hook and tension.

This pattern is designed using Premier Home Cotton Yarn (cotton blend approximately 131 yds/75 g) ≈ 1.75 yds per gram.
When substituting yarn, choose a yarn with a similar weight and structure rather than matching yardage exactly. Cotton and cotton blend yarns will work best for durability and stitch definition. Adjust your hook size as needed to achieve a dense, durable fabric.

The finished dishcloth measures approximately:
9.5″ × 9.5″
The main body is crocheted to approximately 8.25″ square before adding the border and picot edging.
Want to Change the Size?
You can easily adjust the size of your dishcloth by changing your starting chain and working additional or fewer rows.
The stitch pattern is worked in multiples of 3 plus 2. Add or remove multiples of 3 from your starting chain, then continue working until the dishcloth is approximately square before beginning the border.
Pattern
Row 1 (RS):
With larger hook, ch 30, work 1 sc in 2nd chain from hook and each ch across, turn—29 sts.
Row 2 (WS):
Ch 1 (not included as a st here and throughout), work 1 sc in first st, *1 dc in next st, 1 sc in next st; rep from * across, turn—29 sts.
Row 3:
Ch 1, work 1 sc in first st, *1 dc in next st, 1 sc in next st; rep from * across, turn—29 sts.
Rows 4-25:
Repeat Row 3 until the dishcloth measures approximately 8.25″ square, ending on the right side. After the final row, change to a smaller hook.
Border
Round 1 (RS):
Ch 1, turn, work 25 sc evenly up next side (1 sc in each row), at corner work 3 sc, pm in 2nd sc, work 29 sc across bottom edge, at corner work 3 sc, pm in 2nd sc, work 25 sc evenly up next side, at corner work 3 sc, pm in 2nd sc, work 29 sc evenly across top edge, at corner work 3 sc, pm in 2nd sc, sl st in first sc to join.
Round 2:
Ch 1, 1 sc in each st around, at each marked stitch, work 3 sc, sl st in first sc to join.
Picot Edge
Round 3:
Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same first st, sk next st, *(sc, ch 2, sc) in next st, sk next st; rep from * around, sl st in first sc to join. Fasten off and weave in tails.
Blocking
For a polished finish, wet block by soaking the dishcloth, gently squeezing out excess water, and pinning to 9.5 inches by 9.5 inches. Allow to dry completely. Alternatively, lightly steam to relax and smooth the stitches.
