The Serena Shell Stitch Top has quickly become one of my favourite garments I’ve designed. There’s something so relaxing about working the alternating shell-and-V stitch pattern, and I absolutely love how lightweight and breathable the finished fabric feels.

Woman standing indoors wearing a colorful striped crochet sweater crafted with the Serena Shell Stitch and blue jeans, smiling at the camera. A fireplace and bookshelf are visible in the background—a perfect cozy setting to showcase this beautiful crochet pattern.

One of my favourite things about this design is how versatile it is. You can make a classic short-sleeve top for warm summer days or continue working the sleeves for a beautiful long-sleeve version that transitions perfectly into spring and fall.

Whether you’re heading to the beach, enjoying dinner on the patio, or simply looking for an everyday crochet top you’ll reach for again and again, I think Serena is going to become a wardrobe favourite.

Once the yoke reaches your desired depth, you’ll separate for the body and sleeves, then finish with your preferred sleeve length and a beautiful shell-stitch neckline edging.

One of my favourite parts of top-down garments is that you can try them on throughout the project, making it easy to customize the fit.

Why I Love Katia Fair Cotton

I designed both versions of the Serena Top using Katia Fair Cotton, and honestly, it has become one of my favourite summer yarns.

It creates a fabric that feels soft, lightweight, and breathable while still giving the stitches beautiful definition.

As the wife of a farmer, I also love the story behind this yarn. Katia Fair Cotton is produced using organic cotton grown by small farmers under Fair Trade standards, helping support sustainable farming communities while creating an exceptional yarn for handmade garments.

If you’re looking for a cotton that feels comfortable against your skin and blocks beautifully, I can’t recommend this yarn enough.

Gauge

4 shells × 9 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) after blocking

Measure your gauge after blocking.

The shell stitch fabric relaxes once washed and blocked, so checking your blocked gauge will ensure your finished top fits as intended.

Need Help with Gauge?

Gauge is one of the most important steps when making crochet garments.

In my complete Gauge Guide, I cover:

  • Why gauge matters
  • How to measure correctly
  • How to adjust hook sizes
  • Common gauge mistakes
A person stands indoors facing away, wearing a colorful crocheted top featuring a delicate shell stitch and white pants, in a living room with wooden floors, a chair, and shelves with decor.

Yarn Substitutions

When substituting the recommended yarn, choose one that meets the pattern gauge and has a similar yardage-to-weight ratio. To compare yarns, use this simple formula: Yards ÷ Grams = Yards per Gram

For example: Katia Fair Cotton 170 yds ÷ 50 g = 3.40 yds/g

Yarns with a similar fibre content and a comparable yards-per-gram ratio will generally produce a similar fabric. Always make and block a gauge swatch before beginning.

XS (S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X)

The pattern is written for the smallest size, with the larger sizes in parentheses ( ). If there is only one number, it applies to all sizes—a step-by-step video tutorial is provided on YouTube for size small.

Colour Changes: For the striped version, change colours every 2 rounds. Work one Shell Stitch Round and one V Stitch Round in each colour. Change to the next colour on the slip-stitch join at the end of the V-Stitch Round, and begin the following Shell-Stitch Round with the new colour.

Colour Sequence: MC (White), A (Medium Rose), B (Bright Turquoise), C (Mustard), D (Lilac). Work 2 rounds in each colour following this sequence: MC, A, MC, B, MC, C, MC, D, then repeat from A as established.

Yoke

Notes: Use four stitch markers to track your increase sections. Place each marker in the v stitch of each increase section and move it up each row.

On shell rows, when you reach a marked v stitch, work:

ch 1, v st in marked v st, ch 1, then continue with shells across.

On the following row, work a v stitch into each ch-1 space on either side of the marked v stitch and in the v stitch. These create your increases and must not be skipped.

Rep Rounds 4 & 5, ending with 58 (66, 74, 82, 90, 98, 106, 114, 122) shells.

Fit Check Before Separating

Before separating the body and sleeves, try on your yoke. Using the stitch markers, temporarily join the front and back at each armhole to check the sleeve depth.

  • For a snugger fit, separate closer to the underarm.
  • For a looser fit, work additional increase rounds before separating.

Continue until the sleeve depth feels comfortable. If additional bust ease is needed, use the Optional Bust Adjustment.

Blocking Note:

This fabric relaxes with blocking and will gain slight ease.

Before blocking: 4.5 shells and 9.5 rows = 4 inches

After blocking: 4 shells and 9 rows = 4 inches

Do not size up based solely on unblocked measurements.

Separating Body and Sleeves – Adjustment Option

No increases are worked on this round. Work the same number of v sts as shells from the previous round. Skip the chain one spaces at each marked corner. This maintains your current stitch count.

Optional Bust Adjustment:

If additional bust ease is needed but sleeve depth is correct, work a v st into each of the four chain one spaces at the former increase points when separating. This adds 4 v sts around the body and will give an additional 4″ of bust ease (1″ per shell/v st).

Round 1:

Sk over the sleeve and sl st into the next v st to join, Ch 3, sk ch-1 sp, (v st in 3rd dc of shell st, ch 1) in each shell across front, sk ch-1 sp, sk marked v st, sk sleeve section to next marked v st, sk ch-1 sp, (v st in 3rd dc of shell st, ch 1) in each shell across back, sk ch-1 sp, sl st in starting ch-3 to join—32 (36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64) v sts.

Round 2:

Ch 3, shell st in each v st around, sl st in starting ch-3 to join—32 (36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64) shells.

Round 3:

Ch 3, (v st in 3rd dc of shell st, ch 1) around, sl st in starting ch-3 to join—32 (36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64) v sts.

Round 4:

Ch 3, shell st in each v st around, sl st in starting ch- 3 to join—32 (36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64) shells.

Rounds 5-20:

Rep Rounds 3 & 4.

Round 21:

Ch 3, (shell st in 3rd dc of shell st) around, sl st in starting ch-3 to join—32 (36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56, 60, 64) shells. Fasten off and weave in tails.

Length Adjustment

Length is customizable. Try on your top as you work and add rounds to reach your desired coverage. Keep in mind the fabric will relax slightly after blocking.

Sleeves (Left & Right)

Note: With MC, leave a long tail for seaming the underarm. Sleeves are worked in joined rounds. Left Sleeve, with a slip knot on the hook and RS facing, join yarn with a sl st into the first marked v st at the underarm. Sl st into the second marked v st to close the underarm opening. Right Sleeve, with a slip knot on the hook and RS facing, join yarn with a sl st to underarm.

Round 1:

Ch 3, (v st in 3rd dc of shell st, ch 1); rep around, sl st in starting ch-3 to join—13 (15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29) v sts.

Round 2:

Ch 3, shell st in each v st around, sl st in ch-3 to join—13 (15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29) shells.

Short Sleeve:

Skip to Round 33 to finish. Fasten off and sew the underarm closed using the starting tail.

Long Sleeve:

Rounds 3–32:

Rep Rounds 1 and 2. Or continue repeating Rounds 1 and 2 until the desired sleeve length is reached, then finish with Round 3.

Round 33:

Ch 3, (shell st in 3rd dc of shell st) around, sl st in starting ch-3 to join—13 (15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 29) shells.

Fasten off and sew the underarm closed using the starting tail.

Neck Edging

With a slipknot on hook, join with a sl st in the first sc of the setup Row, sc in same st, sk next 3 sts, work shell in next st, sk next 3 sts, *sc in next st, sk 3 sts, work shell in next st, sk 3 sts; rep from * around, sl st in first sc to join. Fasten off and weave in tails.

Blocking

Fill a sink or basin with cool water and add a mild detergent or wool wash. Submerge the top and allow it to soak for 25 to 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly, then gently squeeze out excess water. Do not wring or twist.

Roll the garment in a clean, dry towel and press gently to remove additional moisture. Lay flat, shape to the finished measurements, and allow to dry completely.

Washing & Care Instructions

For best results, hand wash your Serena Top using the blocking method above and lay flat to dry. If preferred, the garment may also be machine washed on a gentle cycle at 30°C. Do not bleach or tumble dry. Professional dry cleaning is also suitable.

Tip: Reshape the garment while damp to help maintain its original fit and finish.
